Just finished watching Devilman crybaby

While the ending really bugged me even though it was poetic Justice, what still gets me is how the humans practically self destruct just as Satan hoped. I know the Salem witch trials were a prime inspiration for the manga, and I know of the folly that befalls humanity, but if the same was to happen in real life would humans destroy themselves just as swiftly or is there a chance of survival?
