Olicity Screen time - Season 3

So lately I’ve been dipping my toe into the murky cesspit that is the Arrow Reddit, to see how the other half live. And it is, as others have said before, a teeming pile of unfounded Olicity and Felicity hatred. 

One of the mantras I see time and again about Olicity is that the ship ‘took up too much screentime’ in seasons 3 and 4 - widely known in those circles as the seasons where Arrow’s quality took a nosedive. The ship was too much of a focus; it took away valuable time that could have been spent on Laurel’s rise to BC, and other more ‘worthy’ plotlines. It has been repeated in that forum so often that it’s become a fact. 

The scientist in me couldn’t let that lie. Because facts require evidence. 

So I set out to disprove them. 

Let’s start with season 3 (season 4 to follow in a separate post)

Hypothesis: Olicity scenes actually took up a small % of the total run time of season 3 of Arrow

Methodology: I watched all the season 3 clips uploaded to YouTube by Olicity Queen and timed all the Olicity scenes. And by Olicity scenes, I included direct discussions about their relationship, declarations of love, instances of flirting or excessive eye contact, grieving, pining, indirect discussions about their relationship (i.e. one character talking to a non-ship character), PDA, heart-to-heart talks, etc. The only scenes excluded were those in which Felicity and Oliver were in mission mode (i.e. exclusively talking about the latest mission (i.e. shop talk, similar to what Oliver/Diggle engage in) with no PDA, heart eyes, etc).

Results:

7%

Olicity scenes took up 7% of the total run time of season 3. And, on average, each episode had less than 3 minutes of ‘Olicity time’ (also 7%). 

Lets look at that in graph form:

I think this pretty much proves my hypothesis. 

Feel free to whip out this data the next time some hater claims Olicity took up too much time!
