the Salaita affair emails that unintentionally make the case for the humanities

Well, this data dump from UIUC is quite the vital cache of documents, isn’t it?

Ironic how, in the midst of a heated debate that has by all accounts divided humanities departments from STEM on UIUC’s campus (and some of the emails allude to this fact), these emails themselves prove the need for a robust humanities/liberal arts education.

Electronic data dumps like this will likely become the common method of achieving “transparency” in the midst of all manner of political crises, and as traditional journalism continues to streamline, the burden will continue to shift to citizens to make sense of them. But only those trained to read, contextualize, and analyze texts will be able to swiftly sift through hundreds or thousands of pages of emails and other arcane documents. Right now it’s relatively obscure—to the lay person—matters of Salaita, academic freedom, and faculty governance. But in future it'll be matters of much more widely understood importance like municipal and corporate malfeasance, school board dramas, housing discrimination, police corruption, and the like.
