You actually think he's going to leave when his term limit is up?

The man who sent a mob to lynch Congress the last time it was time for him to go, then just pardoned the people who did it?

He will NEVER leave voluntarily, and he will be WAY more prepared this time to hold onto power, and will have had four years to systematically eliminate all possible checks on his doing so.

They've already introduced a Constitutional Amendment to let him go for a third term. It won't pass, but that's not the point- its to normalize the idea so when he ignores the term limits there's less pushback.

And if he dies in office, it'll just be Vance- same fascism, younger package.

Shit like this, counting down until his term is over, just normalizes what's happening and encourages people to think that if they just keep their heads down they can wait it out- which is exactly what the fascists want while they consolidate their power.

We need to be clear about this right now: It's not "four more years." It's "Until the regime falls."

This is NOT to say that there is no point in voting- anywhere that we can get Democratic (or progressive independent) officials elected at state or local levels, preferably ones with a bit of backbone, will make it easier to obstruct and delay them. But that alone won't be enough any more. Right now we need to be making general strike plans (labour organizations have been planning one for 2028 for a while, though that is REALLY waiting too long now), pushing Blue state Democrats to refuse to comply with Federal authority, or, failing that, praying for the military to mutiny.

I’m going to put this in the words of @thunderlina because they were absolutely right when they said it on one of my other countdown posts (can’t find which one).

I want to note, to everyone freaking out about him becoming "president for life" or whatever, is the odds of that actually happening are slim. To do that would require sweeping changes to the constitution and the basic structure of the U.S. government that he does not have the power to make. He'd need a wide majority of congress (2/3 of both the House and Senate) to agree to allow that and that simply will never happen with how slim the Republican majority currently is. Even then there's no guarantee that the Republicans in congress would be willing to go along with it to begin with and I can assure you many of them would not.

There's also the simple fact that Trump is pushing 80, riddled with health issues, and already has two failed assassination attempts behind him. God knows if he'll even be alive come the next election cycle. "But what about J.D. Vance?" Trump got as far as he has in large part due to the character he's built up over decades in the public eye, he has a cult of personality no other conservative politician will be able to fully capture once he's gone. J.D. Vance is a nobody in comparison. Plenty of Trump supporters will support him too, don't get me wrong, but it's not going to be with nearly the same passion they have for Trump. When Trump is gone the Republican party will be a massively different, much more disorganized and far weaker, beast.

I’d also like to point out that, as dire as things are, we ARE getting judiciary W’s and our national protests seem to be taking effect. No fucking defeatism.

If you care about mass deportations or not. Let me caution you with the facts of stories of US citizens being detained in our country simply for speaking Spanish. There was a case in Milwaukee of a Grandmother, her daughter and her little girl all being detained for this very thing. All three from Puerto Rico, US citizens. My point is its extremely slippery slope our country is now on thanks to Trump Administration.
