How do we cope with choice?

Brian Reich in his response to Judy's choice conundrum makes the point that he doesn't want to choose, but to engage. He writes: I don't want to choose. Why not? Because there isn't one source of information out there that gives me everything I want.

It's an interesting premise and I agree with the motivation that fuels it: Expanding your horizons involves tasting from a broad data menu. An open/liberal/broad-minded attitude to information demands that we absorb as much as possible and from as many sources as possible. We want to reconstruct the truth of an event ourselves from the myriad pieces available. But to think that we're not actively making a choice is an illusion:

Even the most avid information junkie, monitoring 20 plus feeds and digesting a stream of online and offline media, is never covering the entire spectrum of data delivered and is implicitly making a choice. Narrowing down your daily intake to 20 feeds, excludes another 40.

And this is only talking about national media. Start parsing through what's available globally in terms of information in English, as well as in other languages, and choice is not only inevitable but a necessity given our brains' limited processing power. Many of us who are multilingual and/or who are of mixed cultural backgrounds keep in touch with news in several countries, and each country increases exponentially the number of media and blogs to peruse. I have to choose one particular information menu over another, if I don't want to go insane or end up with meaningless, unprocessed tidbits of information colliding in my brain and adding up to noise and not much more.

The question of choice actually ties nicely into the debate currently raging over whether blogs and/or social media are a digital and social revolution that will undermine traditional media, or whether they are simply an additional media outlet that is rapidly adopting the processes and rules of established media.

Trevor Butterworth in his piece "Time for the last post" for the Financial Times makes the latter point, partly arguing that blogs only exacerbate the current data glut (in developed economies especially). He cites blogger Choire Sicha who claims the blogosphere is only increasing fragmentation and segregation of information, thereby obscuring the macro perspective and linear storytelling of traditional media. In other words, more information does not equal better information.

While I don't think blogs will replace "old" media anytime soon, I do think they do more than just confuse mainstream storytelling and obfuscate reality. And as this site and other blog projects such as cph 127 or in paris now (or on a larger scale, Technorati) show, there is a community, or communities, crystallizing out there in the digital flux, and they can rally very rapidly and efficiently when needed (see my post about the German blogosphere doing just that).

As for a bad case of data gluttony, I agree with Brian: More may not be better, but it is up to us - now active participants in creating and using media - to make the selections that create the best "storytelling" for our needs. The tools to do so are not perfect yet, but they're developing at a rapid clip and so is the blogosphere's realignment into manageable sectors, much like any new industry in fact.

It's interesting that in an age of increasing specialization we're given the opportunity to become more generalist again, as technology facilitates unprecedented access to specialized knowledge, previously the reserve of ivory towers or the initiated few (think niche blogs on medicine, science, literature). Is this necessarily so unwise?
