The first attempt at graphically capturing a panel discussion and why it's different from sketchnoting presentations explained here. This one's worth a listen.
What. A panel discussion at Stanford on the Future of Data Sciences, dated July 2015.
Who. Four contributors and a moderator.
How. The original intent was to dive in, playing the discussion twice and capturing it differently each time. The first attempt would be fairly relaxed [1], freestyled, no clear restrictions or guides to follow, the main exercise is to develop self-awareness and get used to visualising. I found the experience of listening, choosing what, and how to visualise the content simultaneously very, very hard.
The second run [2a] was a reaction to the first try: less wordy, exploring emphasis on metaphors and imageries, and creating intention, which was to provide a map from which further discussion can springboard. For completeness, I ran the discussion once more [2b], filled spaces where I had forgotten specifically what was said, and adjusted spacing. Separately, to the left of the board [2c] I made a list of notable topics I missed in the visual as a note to self. By this time, I had become familiar with the discussion and had to stop.
Next. Interestingly, the first capture was less organised but also less linear (notice [2] follows the discussion clockwise starting from the top left). Because this is a talk in a vacuum, it will be fun to play with different directions i.e. the what and who is this for, and identifying and creating pivot points. It will also take some getting used to listening while synthesising while drawing. Oh, and I'll need to work on consistency in colours.
