Data Sculptures

We designed Data Sculptures for the opening of Holis - the first waste free store in Linz. The sculptures were related to the use of plastic bags in Austria, the CO2 emissions in the production of some food products, and to the increased size of the waist circumference in different age groups (in German “Schwimmreifen”).

Austrian cucumber soup with spices from Syria and Afghanistan

While preparing an iced cucumber soup in the last days of the heatwave we got thinking about spices and how would our diet look like without them. The iced cucumber soup is a typical dish in many countries served during the hot season and prepared in many variations depending on the typical ingredients of the region. What makes the Austrian recipe special and at which point does a traditional recipe changes the taste with outside influences?

As a quick test we spiced up the Austrian cucumber soup wich traditional spices from Syria and Afghanistan, where currently most refugees arrive to Austria. The visual difference could immediately be seen, but the taste stayed the same in this such small amount.

“Made By Numbers” represents a design methodology that translates data into form. The 5′ high sculpture is physical and interactive (sound, light). The form expresses the year-in-the-life of our agency, showing changes over time. The piece can also be “played” via a simple hand movement up or down, releasing 52 sonic chords and light effects – all tied to the data.

Created by David Bowen, this amazing sculpture uses wave data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data buoy station 46075 Shumagin Islands Alaska. Creating a beautiful live sculpture of the wave patterns. Find this so soothing to watch, in the same way as I'd expect from waves.

Cylinder by Andy Huntington and Drew Allan is an elegant series of data sculpture based on sound analysis. A mapping of the frequency and time domains produces cylindrical forms representing the spatial characteristics of the sound input. Physical versions of the digital 3D models are then 3D printed using stereolithography.
