Lesson 44: Hiding is a part of life
Yesterday I decided to go overtime at work with so much projects on my table I needed to get moving on. I'm not one to procrastinate if I know there's time I can use. Last night I was already nursing a serious headache which I have been trying to ignore since morning. Robin says it might be because of our series of late nights but I told him I got enough sleep over the weekend. He was doing some on location work so I didn't bother to ask if he planned on seeing me. Usually Tuesday was our date-night because Monday was workaholic day. I was a bit taken aback when he called to ask me where I was. It was around 5:44pm and I told him I was about to leave the office. He told me not to because he was coming to fetch me. Instantly I beamed and told him I'd wait for him. That waiting took about an hour. The office already turned off its AC and I was stuck in my cubicle playing with my tablet already growing less patient every minute. Finally he called that he was near already so I went down our elevator and waited for his car out front.
I was tired, my sides were aching for some strange reason beyond me, I was hungry, and he was just too grope-y. He asked what was wrong with me because somehow I was different. I told him nothing changed and that I was fine. He suddenly lost his spirit and asked "Tell me, who touched you in the office?" I was surprised with his accusation. He suddenly started telling me that he's not so sure anymore that I love him and that I want forever with him as much as he does. That set off my alarm and I turned into a full attentive girlfriend mode. I don't know where he gets his suspicions. There are moments I'm not really in to making our because I just wanted to cuddle and here he comes thinking I'm no longer interested. He assumes I'm distracted by some other guy romancing me rather than just my headache. He wasn't responding to my way of lightening up so I just cuddled silently, repeating constantly that I loved him forever. Sometimes I feel like I'm the guy who's doing all the romancing but whatever, the things you do for love.
"Have you watched Miley's performance at the 2013 VMA's?"
"Wasn't it so disturbing?"
"Sweetie, I love you forever.. but you're actually close to dressing up like her in you shorts and hanging blouse."
I was taken aback by his comment that I turned my back on him. He hugged me from behind and kissed my neck hoping to get me to turn around. I was starting to get pissed with him.
Traffic was horrible and he couldn't decide on a place to eat. Finally he chose on an all-day breakfast place along the main road. Just as we entered the restaurant he greeted this guy with a fist bump. I was used to his affiliations so I blended to the background and went behind him. I knew he wouldn't be introducing me which is very typical of him and I sat down on a table for two. They had their greetings and then James told me he had to step aside to make a phone call. It was very normal for him to leave me for work and though sometimes is irritated me, I let him go. The waitress handed me a menu. While I was browsing, my phone started ringing and it surprised me to see Robin calling me.
"Sweets, I want you to get out and go to the restaurant at the corner."
"Just go out and go okay?"
I stepped out of the restaurant feeling a little confused. The guy he was talking to earlier was smoking outside the restaurant. I didn't see or even wanted to glimpse at his face. Sometimes people greet him in public and he says hi but he doesn't really know them personally. So, I've taken into just putting my head down during these situations because more likely we wouldn't be seeing each other again.
I saw Robin outside and I walked directly towards him.
He pointed to the corner restaurant and I followed him still confused about what was happening. It took a long time before he finally caught up with me.
"That man over there is a reporter."
"He's a gossip reporter. Did he get a look at your face?"
"I don't know. I didn't even look at him."
"I think he did. He saw us together didn't he?"
"Well YEAH. We went in together but we weren't holding hands or anything sweet like that."
At that instant it all flooded in towards me. My clothes, my make up. His status and image.
"Do I look like a hooker?"
"Seriously. Do I look like a hooker? Is this why you didn't want to be seen with me?"
He answered his phone and it was his driver calling to say a traffic enforcer seized his license. We had to walk about 6 blocks to get to where he was. Robin tried to hold my hand but I pulled it away.
"What is this? Why are you pulling away?"
"You don't want people seeing us remember? The press is all over this place."
I walked faster and he followed behind to create a distance between us so people won't think we were together. When we got to his driver, I let him do all the talking as I slid behind a pole so I won't catch any attention. The enforcers were looking at me but was still talking to Robin. I tried for the door but it was locked so I continued hiding silently behind the pole that separated me from Robin's world.
After a few apologies, the enforcers went away and I slid inside the car. Robin went in after.
"This is turning out to be one hell night."
I looked at Robin and was saddened to hear him say that. It was a hell night because he decided to come fetch me when traffic was bad. It was a hell night because he was with me when a reporter showed up. It was a hell night because his driver got caught for trying to pick him up to stow me away from sight.
"Are you embarrassed to be seen with me?
I just had to ask. Once again I felt unworthy to be the woman beside him. My simplicity, my childishness, it would ruin his career. It would be a scandal. I would be the most hated girl in his world. Why did I ever consider this would really work out?
And then again he confuses me.
"Didn't we agree that I would keep you safe from the limelight? From the bad media? We don't wan't your photos or your name splattered everywhere and people throwing their first judgment on you at one look without even knowing who you really are. I promised to keep you safe. Not yet. Not until you're ready."
He kissed me on the lips chastely as he wrapped his arm around me. At that moment I felt the warmth of his protection surround me. He was always going to protect me no matter what.
For now, dodging the reporters may not really be my ideal date but as long as I have Robin I can take on anything.
