Davrin week Day 1: Hope/Gloom

A/N: Hello everyone! I am back to writing after a 2 year break. My dissertation is kicking my ass at the moment, and the deadline is fast approaching, so what is a good way to procrastinate academic writing? Fanfiction writing of course. Hopefully this isn't too terrible, I did re-read once, but i am so rusty I genuinely can't tell if its any good or if I am happy with it, so here you go. Credits for the prompts go to @datvcompanionweeks! Davrin is my favourite so I decided to participate in this one. I'm not sure if I will write for all the prompts yet, but we shall see. Anyways, heed the CW and enjoy!

It was a shitty day. The kind of shitty day where it starts off like any other, but over its course it becomes worse, every little thing adding up until it becomes a truly bad day. So bad even that the eclectic group, currently trudging through some forgotten part of the Anderfels, didn’t even attempt to hold a conversation, aware that it would more than likely turn into pointless squabbling born of fatigue. Even Assan’s mischievousness was tampered down, his paws and claws threading slowly through puddles instead of excitedly jumping in them and making a mess of himself and anyone near.

The sky was merciless, what seemed like simple grey clouds at the beginning of their venture quickly turning into a dark greyish-blue ceiling, spewing heavy raindrops relentlessly. At the beginning Davrin had absentmindedly noted that the colour was similar to the warden uniform. That was before he was soaked to the bone and his armour started creaking from the moisture. Now he just made sure not to slip in the deep slick mud under their feet, keeping his gaze mostly towards the ground. But the weather wasn’t the only thing keeping their spirits low.

The Blight was strong here, and although they have been fighting darkspawn since the beginning, clearing out pockets of them was something entirely different from stumbling upon settlements engorged with boils and tendrils, former inhabitants, now grotesquely mutated, twitching in the coils. Or roaming the streets seeking anything alive. Houses were ransacked, families trying to grab what they can before fleeing, toys laying forgotten in the road where they were dropped. And those were the lucky ones. Spells and arrows flew once more, blades made contact with sinew and bony extremities, Davrin’s shield repelled blows and charged enemies again and again until none were left. Even such a small skirmish was starting to weigh on the warrior. Ever since he joined the Grey Wardens, he took pride in his abilities, in his ability to stay determined in the face of danger and protect those who needed it.

But it wouldn’t be a shitty day if even he didn’t start succumbing to the gloom of it.

Rook called for a break, a nearby alcove a good enough refuge from the constant pelt of the rain. The party all found a semi-dry spot and sat down with various groans and sighs, Assan’s attempts to get dry and making water fly everywhere raising a few complaints. The alcove was quiet, squelching footsteps no longer accompanying the murmur of rain and deep thundering of the clouds, making it seem far more peaceful than it had any business being all things considered. Emmrich lit a small magical fire, the small bit of warmth a welcome alleviation of their soaked equipment, though true relief would only come at the Lighthouse. Davrin methodically cleaned his sword despite knowing it would be covered in blood and gore once again soon enough. His eyes lingered on the gryphon relief on the metal surface of his shield. If someone had told him that joining the Wardens would allow him to see gryphons come alive once, he would have called them a fool. But he also knew, deep down, his younger self would have been hopeful too. Perhaps foolishly so, but he would still hold out hope in some corner of his heart, that he would witness the legendary flying beasts.

A chirp and a very, very, cold beak nudged the nape of his neck. He shivered and half-heartedly swatted at his charge, mischief clearly back on the menu, even after such a small break.

“What is it, boy? I don’t have any snacks! And don’t even think about making me dry you yet, you’ll just jump into the first puddle you see anyways.”, Davrin chastised half-heartedly. But a small grin tugged at his lips, as it often did when it came to his furry -feathery? - companion. A squawk was his only response, the lopsided ear swaying as Assan cocked his head at him. With a shake of his head, the Warden patted his forehead, scritching at the feathers there. A low rumbling purr became another constant sound in the alcove, though the rain seemed to let up a bit.

Davrin allowed himself to muse that this gryphon, despite his unruliness and teenage moods, really was one of the true essences of the world. Lively, curious, has a fair share of his own dark moods, but in the end, he will always bounce back, as energetic as before. He supposes the world will have to be a bit more like Assan if it hopes to survive past the horrors and tragedies. Though he quickly thinks perhaps not too much like Assan, as the latter proceeded to lose his balance and became more akin to a horrendously muddy creature with bright blue eyes instead of a predator of the skies. As he was preparing a slightly harsher reprimand, the sky cleared, the first bit of sunlight in what felt like forever gracing the land. It seemed to invigorate the group once more, even if they were making their way back home instead of pressing on. The promise of warm food and a hot bath hastening their pace back to the eluvian. And the hope that today’s bad day wouldn’t end as horribly as it started.
