Daughters (2020)

I didn't expect my full art comeback to be anything other than ML but I've found myself binging a Thai series (Daughters/Sia-Dai) starring one my faves, Kitty Chicha, because you know... I miss seeing her in Girl From Nowhere which isn't due to return for another half a year or so.

Anyway, enjoy these characters I drew entirely from memory! I didn't even let myself check if I got the hairstyles right, I like to learn how to draw someone by first seeing what I can do from my mind.

This series, Daughters, is really making an impression on me. First of all, these characters? My kids, I must protect them. So far my thoughts are that it seems like the same concept as Euphoria. I couldn't get into Euphoria but I get the general idea and Daughters captures the same thing. The difference is it feels more raw. It isn't as iconic and beautifully shot, but it feels so real. The kids feel real. It makes the circumstances hit harder and the consequences more devastating in my opinion. I think the biggest thing is the acting is more convincing. This isn't to say Euphoria acting is bad, it's stylistic. This type of theme is easy to romanticize, and I don't think it's possible to with Daughters because of the realism. It takes place in Thailand in the 90s, so it isn't going to be as attractive to American audiences... but I really think it deserves attention. The performances are fantastic and the story hits exactly as it should. It's fascinating how the narrative doesn't entirely take sides. Favoring the fate of some characters for moralistic reasons... nope it really said "that's life" while also making a point on the way to live. Like Euphoria, it has plenty of dark themes, so proceed with caution if you decide to watch. I couldn't find it on a streaming platform, but you'll find it if you search "Daughters 2020" or "Sia-Dai 2020".

started watching Daughters 2020 bc of Kitty and ended up crying bc the girls didn’t deserve all the trauma they’ve experienced😭 stop torturing them they did nothing wrong!!!
