Results from the John Furman Memorial Tournament

I would first like to start off by thanking J.D. Botsford for the use of his Pool hall. I would also like to thank Chris Correia as he stayed open late to let us cram this event into one day. I would also like to thank Brad Lucas for his help with running the Tournament doing the Calcutta and Promoting this event. I would also like to thank all the players that showed up because without you this event wouldn’t have been possible.

This event started off with 39 players which was a better turn out then the year before. At the end of the night there was 2 standing Erik Hjorleifson and Toby Huang. Erik who was knocked to the B side after his first match had an incredible run as he never lost a match from there on out. Toby went through the A side where he ended up winning the A side final against Ryan Ven Hest.

The winner of this year’s John Furman Memorial is Toby Huang as Erik Hjorleifson and he decided to chop. I hope with years to come this event will grow stronger and be able to fill up. The Break Room is one of the best Halls in Ontario to hold Tournaments as there is ample space filled with Gold Crowns. The Break Room will continue to hold this event every year. Who will take the Cup next year is the Question.

ka-ching, kaa-Chang ….

The 6th event of the Shooters ‘404’ 9 Ball series was held on the January 31/ February 1, 2015 weekend at Shooters Snooker and Sports Club. Fifty-five players made an appearance to play in this long running tournament series. The $1000 added event continues to attract top talent in the GTA and from across southern Ontario.

When play concluded on Saturday, Ben Chang, Chad Bishop, Greg Plester and Tony Hong emerged undefeated from the ‘A’ side of the draw. On the one loss ‘B’ side, Sumon Sarkar, Marc Dumoulin, Isaac Ramos, Rob Johnson, Dave Lettner, Vince Belanger, Ronald Giron and Steve Menzies endured the rigours of the day to qualify for a Sunday appearance.

In the ‘A’ side final Ben Chang defeated Greg Plester sending Plester to the ‘B’ side and Chang to the hot seat. On the ‘B’ side, Isaac Ramos was waiting for Plester but the determined Plester defeated Ramos in the ‘B’ final setting up a rematch with Chang for the tournament title. In the tournament final Ben Chang again defeated Greg Plester claiming yet another title in this 2014/15 season.

Congratulations to Ben Chang on his tournament win. Ben continues his run as the player to beat this season with consistently strong performances in almost every tournament.

The next ‘404’ event will take place on February 28/ March 1st, 2015 at Shooters.

Many thanks again to those who participated. Please note that players must notify the tournament organizer of cancellations in sufficient time to permit others to participate. This is the primary reason the tournament begins unnecessarily late time after time.

On the weekend of January 17-18, thirty-five players were in attendance for the Four Points Tour at BigWigs Billiards in Newmarket, Ontario.

Erik Hjorleifson appeared to be unstoppable as he steamrolled each of his opponents on his way to the finals. Erik had wins over Chris Lee (10-2), Ben Chang (9-5), George Sokolowski (10-5), Mike Leigh (9-2), Dave Lettner (10-2) and Sumon Sarkar (9-2).

Dave Lettner bounced back from his a-side loss to Erik and held his composure. Dave’s journey continued on the b-side with wins over Vince Belanger (hill-hill), Adam Roos and Sumon Sarkar (hill-hill). In the finals, Dave pulled out another hill-hill victory over Erik “Big Red” Hjorleifson.

Thanks again to BigWigs Billiards staff for hosting this event and additional thanks to the tournament director Blain Jorgensen for running another top notch tournament.

Paul Duell wins 6th RCC Title!

At 11:00am on March 1st, 32 players once again showed up at Tony’s Billiards in Guelph, to compete in the 6th Royal City 9 Ball Challenge.

The Calcutta proved that once again, there were some amazing shooters, getting ready to shoot their “A” game.

The draw was done, and it would not be an easy road to the finals, for eventual champ Paul Duell. He beat out Dave “Chag” Stewart 1st round, then hit Jeremy Isard, who sent Duell to a long road on the B Side.

Paul successful beat out many great competitors: Ephraim Day, Kevin Stronach, Chris Fawcett, Dave Johnson, Dave Lettner, Rod Arsenault and Adam Monture, where he finally made his way back to the A Side, meeting up with Jason Knight, who had yet to be defeated in the tournament.

It was an exciting match, with the games going back and forth, but ultimately Paul Duell came out the victor, and became the 6th RCC Champion!

'Gummer' Gets it Done at BigWigs

BigWigs Billiards in Newmarket hosted the 3rd stop of this year’s 404 9-Ball Tour on November 16-17th.

In the top half of the bracket, Chad Bishop looked unstoppable as he cruised through the field with wins over Russ Cormier (6-4), Mike Atanasijevic (6-2), Mario Morra (6-4), Jeremy Isard (6-5) and Wade Hill (6-5). In the lower bracket, Chris Lee had wins over Isaac Ramos (6-7), Jeff Pollock (6-2), Kevin Lazaro (6-4), Shane Gummerson (6-5) and Greg Plester (6-4). Chris eventually was sent to the b-side of the draw after he lost the hot seat match to Chad Bishop (6-3). After a long day of competitive competition on Saturday, the 47-player field was narrowed down to only 12 players.

Shane Gummerson had a healthy breakfast Sunday morning as he starting out with a strong win on the b-side over top level player Mario Morra (7-9). Shane’s stand-up style of play continued into the evening as his game got stronger with each match. Shane dispensed his opponents one-by-one eliminating Dave Lettner (7-5), Wade Hill (7-2), Terry Snache (7-2) and Chris Lee (7-4).

In the final match of the tournament, Shane Gummerson (7) faced Chad Bishop (6). Experience prevailed and “Gummer” took the first place prize with a 7-3 win over Chad.  Nice shooting boys!

Dave Lettner undefeated in 2nd Royal City Challange

The 2nd Royal City 9 Ball Challenge was held on November 9th at Tony’s Billiards. Once again, the event saw a full field of 32 extremely talented pool players, with numerous players waiting on the side lines hoping to get into the tournament.

Rivalry Continues in Newmarket

Bigwigs Billiards in Newmarket hosted the 404 9-Ball Tour this past weekend.  62 players battled it out for a shot at the title.

In the top half of the bracket, Ian Argue was turning heads with wins over TJ Humber (5-5), Isaac Ramos (5-5), Chris Bartha (5-6), John Morra (5-9) and Ryan Clements (5-3). Erik Hjorleifson worked his way through the bottom bracket with wins over Ken DeFilippis (11-3), Ryan Murray (11-2), Rob Henry (11-6), Eric Hildebrand (9-3) and Mario Morra (9-7).

In the hot-seat match, Ian Argue ran out of steam as Erik came out on top with a convincing 11-2 score. Ian then faced John Morra in the b-bracket finals. John Morra played perfect securing his spot in the finals with a 12-0 whitewash.  Only two players remain, John Morra and Erik Hjorleifson.  Erik got the best of John at the last tour stop in Toronto.  John Morra reclaimed his supremacy as he won the final match of the event 9-7.
