My Mum didn't buy many records (the 45rpm single kind) but one of the few I can remember is The Sunshine of Your Smile by Mike Berry. It got to No. 9 in the UK charts in 1980. There was a better quality video of it but that seems to have been taken down.

As Tommy Vance, in the intro, says it's an old song (from 1913) but it's a good one. This version was produced by Chas Hodges, who I assume knew Mike from the 1960's when they both recorded for Joe Meek. Mike is probably best known for playing Mr. Spooner in the later series of popular TV show Are You Being Served. He's the only surviving main cast member of that show.

Chas Hodges was one half of the musical duo Chas & Dave (the other being Dave Peacock). He died in 2018.

Chas Hodges Dead at 74

Chas Hodges, half of the British duo Chas and Dave, has died at 74.

His death from cancer was announced “with tremendous sadness” Monday on the duo’s Twitter page.

"Despite receiving successful treatment for oesophageal cancer recently, Chas suffered organ failure and passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning,” it read.

With musical partner Dave Peacock, Hodges recorded fan favorites such as “Ain't No Pleasing You," "What a Miserable Saturday Night” and "London Girls." Chad and Dave also recorded songs celebrating their favorite football (soccer) team, Tottenham Hotspur.

“Chas Hodges was a brilliant musician and a wonderful friend and he helped me through so many recording sessions with his knowledge of music,” Ritchie Blackmore said on Facebook. “He loved his football team. My awareness of music improved tenfold after knowing this man.

“Goodnight my friend. We'll see you on the other side.”

Before teaming up with Peacock, Hodges was a session musician, playing on records by Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and others.

More recently, Eminem sampled Hodges’ guitar on his hit, “My Name Is.”

“Sorry to hear that we’ve lost Chas Hodges,” Billy Bragg tweeted. “He was an original skiffler, a boogie woogie great and singing ‘Midnight Special’ with him and Dave ... was one of my career highlights.”
