Grace - Jeff Buckley
« It was a point where he was a little bit unsteady, and a lot more vulnerable. So we tried to help him. We took him breakfast, or, were like, Stay over... sleep on the couch I think that's what he wanted... He felt like he could disappear. » — Dave Shouse
« He still felt like a boy. In some ways, he was very mature and developed, and in other ways, he was nothing near. »
« I feel like Memphis walked him down the aisle. Because he was dreaming about his death and he knew something was up, and he felt it... »
— Tammy Shouse
« It's been 20 years and I am still dumbfounded by the beauty of his soul. » — Joan Wasser

Well, I swear I never meant to leave you tied up to a tree that was already restless enough, some people pick up speed before they crumble to dust, and they're gone -

Robert Gordon 18 years. Damn. Actually, that makes sense. Lila is 18 and she was infant when he was here, imitating the sounds she made. Toast to Scotty

Greg Roberson I remember the first time I met Jeff in the early 90's all he wanted to talk about was The Grifters !
May 29, 2015 at 8:30am
Dave Shouse Jeff was smitten with the Grifters. He wanted to loosen up, get trashy. We said "come to Memphis." He loved it here!! Might have stayed put, never know.

Steven Stubblefield Everybody was smitten. I watched a thread yesterday here in austin light up when it was announced you guys were playing fff fest. I won't be here anymore then. But, I hope to catch up to you guys again soon. 18 years was life time ago and somehow it all still feels like yesterday.

Kevin McCready Didn't seem like his label supported his trashy vision
May 29, 2015 at 4:35pm
Dave Shouse No.
May 29, 2015 at 4:42pm
Stuart Sikes The label was skeptical of the direction of the record. Although, It was in no way trashy
May 29, 2015 at 5:32pm
Dave Shouse Agree. Trashy was a term we threw around back then. Loose & rough might be better

I had driven up to Green Bay from Milwaukee to see you, and I remember running into Tripp right when I got there and him saying "you picked a strange night to come see us play." He then told me of the news you had received about Jeff while en route to Green Bay from Minneapolis, and how even though his body hadn't been found yet you all knew that anyone who got swept away in the river wasn't going to survive the experience. I was amazed you were even able to play what turned out to be an abbreviated set. You told me about this photo when I stayed with you and Tammy in 2006, about how small and fragile and sweet he looked standing beside you while you cooked, but this is the first time I have seen it. I hope the sweetness is enduring as strongly as the sadness.

Ann Szalkowski The night I met you. We both lost best friends that April. I cant believe 18 years have passed already. Voices and faces are still like yesterday.

Grifters - Re-Entry Blues (1997)
The Grifters almost play it straight on this song, but they can’t help themselves and take a few detours. Still the song rocks pretty fucking hard and the chorus hints that they could’ve had a hit if so inclined.
It’s harder to tell if I’m staring at hell Or is that the sunrise
