I've been writing a ton of songs lately for both my bands. I always start stripped down on an acoustic guitar. There's something about the rawness of it that I love.

Playing some folk punk songs...
Listen to: The 4th of July by Davey Dynamite and Friends
Where the hell did this band come from? I had never heard of them until they started popping up all over DyingScene’s Best Of 2016 lists. They also happen to be on DyingScene’s label so my more cynical side thought that had to play a part in this band I never heard of being so highly praised but only in that one place. Turns out those dudes just had the drop on all of us as well as one hell of a record on their hands. This is the best new band I heard in 2016. It’s punk rock just the way I like it. Fast and melodic but able to slow down when needed. Intelligent and self-reflective without being pompous, preachy or self-deprecating. And it pulls off the ultimate feat of talking about serious shit but never taking itself too seriously. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before someone like Epitaph swoops in and scoops up this band ala The Menzingers and Joyce Manor. Watch.
Davey Dynamite - Rock and Roll
Hey! Hey! Mama! Rock and Roll will surely die And it doesn't really matter It doesn't really matter Mama! Hey! Hey! Rock and Roll will fade away And it doesn't really matter I don't know if it matters
It will change and it will grow Set in stone that's meant to roll And our memories won't hold much at all And I'm sure it saved our soul But even they will one day go on and go And I don't know if it matters
Hey! Hey! Mama! Rock and roll was stolen by White people in leather White people in leather Mama! Hey! Hey! Rock and Roll was turned away Until it made some cheddar Started selling so much better And the black folks in the streets Targerted by the police Making harmonies and beats despite it all They will watch their art get taken Commodified and put in magazines They will wonder what the fuck still matters
Hey, Hey Mama Neil Young will one day die And I don't know if it matters But it's such a fucking bummer Mama, Hey Hey! His name will someday fade away And no one will remember No one will remember He can sue me for this one But he wrote some killer songs Making art that stood for peace and not for war Operations causing so much harm And I'm thinking that's what matters
Hey, Hey, Mama You and I will one day die And I don't know if it matters But I'm thinking that's what matters Mama, Hey Hey You and I will fade away So let's this fucking matter So let's this fucking matter Let's make this fucking matter Let's make this fucking matter
