Get Shorty eyed for TV version

Add yet another movie to the list of those being developed as TV series. Relatively niche US channel Epix is pushing into territory explored by several other companies and is now working on a small screen version of Get Shorty.

The adaptation will be drawn from both Elmore Leonard's book and the 1996 comedy from Barry Sonnenfeld (scripted by Scott Frank). In the series, the plot will follow Miles Daly, working as an enforcer for a crime ring in Nevada. Worried about his and his daughter's future, he tries to switch to producing movies, putting his ill-gotten gains to work in the shark-infested waters of Hollywood. But instead of escaping the criminal underworld, he discovers that he's accidentally brought it to Los Angeles.

Davey Holmes, whose credits income work on the American version of Shameless and HBO drama In Treatment, wrote the adaptation for the series and will run the show, which is aiming to start shooting later this year for a 2017 air date. Aside from needing to overcome potential apathy about yet another movie-to-TV transition, it'll have big shoes (or hat) to fill, since Leonard's work was most recently and successfully brought to screens with the excellent Justified.

“Get Shorty” Adaptation Gets Series Order at Epix

If there wasn’t an Elmore Leonard novel about Hollywood and the Mob crossing paths, we’re sure someone else, with the way TV is going these days, would make up a series like that eventually.

In the last millennium, there was a movie adaptation of Leonard’s novel Get Shorty starring John Travolta, Rene Russo, Danny DeVito, and Gene Hackman. The crime comedy story is getting revisited in this millennium, but this time doing so on the small screen.

Epix has just handed down a series order for the TV adaptation by veteran writer/producer Davey Holmes.

Currently, this TV version of Get Shorty is being billed as a drama even though the movie was a comedy. We’ll have to wait for the series premiere to find out which side of the dramedy spectrum it’ll fall on.
