Happy 100th birthday to David "Stringbean" Akeman, born June 17, 1915, in Annville, Kentucky! Akeman was one of the Grand Ole Opry's major stars in the 1950s and in 1969 became a cast member of Hee Haw. Akeman was murdered by two cousins after returning to his home in Ridgetop, Tenn. on Nov. 10, 1973. He is considered one of the greatest old-time style banjo pickers, along with Uncle Dave Macon, Grandpa Jones and Ralph Stanley.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – "The Tennessee Board of Parole has voted to grant the release of the man convicted of murdering Grand Ole Opry star David “Stringbean” Akeman.
Wednesday, the board granted John Brown's request for parole. He will be released in the next six weeks.
The 64-year-old Brown had served 41 years of a 198 year sentence, and had been denied parole at least a half dozen times.
Brown had last gone before the board in April. Brown told the board in April that he had been "reformed" through his more than 40 years in prison. He said he knows he can never make up for the horrible crime he committed."
