David Leitch to direct “Kung Fu” reboot movie...
According to Deadline (link), Leitch has signed on to direct the movie for Universal. If you don’t know Kung Fu, it’s okay. It was a shitty tv show starring David Carradine. I think Brandon Lee popped up at some point, too.
The exciting thing is the possibility of Leitch going back to his smaller, intimate action set-pieces. Like the stuff found in Atomic Blonde, rather than the stuff found in Hobbs & Shaw. I’d love to see him direct a proper kung fu movie. I don’t want him to John Wick it up. I want him to tackle true old school shapes. Even if he reinvents them. He’s a founder of 87eleven Action Design, one of the best action teams in Hollywood today.
I’m pretty giddy about this. We could be getting a true new school kung fu movie. Don’t get me wrong, Shang Chi might do the honors before this one but, either way, the future looks good for martial arts in Hollywood.
