Been on a bit of a Vicar of Dibley binge recently and OMG David friggin Horton in the Spring episode breaks my damn heart every time. You can see how genuinely smitten he is with Geraldine and how quickly he's willing to change big aspects of himself to make him more like "the man for her". Though I do kinda wish he's not been quite so old fashioned and proposed as soon as he realised he was in love but instead worked out that a few dates might be required before asking that kind of question. As a fellow Dibley fan have you any thoughts?

I think he’s very much a product of his socio-economic class. He’s someone who due to his upbringing and subsequent life is wildly out of touch with his feelings- love doesn’t come naturally to him. So when he realises that yes, he does love Geraldine, his rationality and his mind sort of switches off.

Underneath that upper class patriarchal mentality of the past (the time in which he grew up and developed and learnt about the world) I do think he’s a Romantic. I mean that in a literary sense as well as a romantic (feelings) sense. It’s just that he struggles to show love in a way that’s obvious to mainstream society, so it results in flamboyant shirts, and making big statements. He loves fast and deeply, he wouldn’t hang around for dates- he doesn’t want to risk losing her before he’s even got her, as it were.

I should also think some of it stems from having had his heart broken in the past, he doesn’t ever want to give Geraldine a reason to run away. He’s had an unhappy ending and it’s warped his perception of love and reality, to such an extent that the realisation of having fallen in love is like a shock to the system.

I genuinely do think he loves her though. You can see it in the way that he looks at her, and when he asks for marriage he really does want a long and happy life with her.

But what breaks my heart so completely is that he feels that in order to be worthy of her love in return he thinks he must change so completely. That he feels that he’s unlovable as the man he was before. And I think Geraldine realises that too. It’s the one thing you can actually pity David for- his lack of ability to love himself and be at peace with who he is, he thinks that he must change to have a good woman to love him, but what he really needs is to be himself with the right woman.

Well, that’s what I think anyway. Always nice to hear from a Dibley fan!
