Tuesday, Jan. 04 at 8:00 p.m. THIS IS SPINAL TAP (1984) A filmmaker documents the history of Spinal Tap, the world's loudest rock band.
This Is Spinal Tap
Remembering David Kaff and Andrea Gibson
Here is my combined remembrance of two artists we lost recently:
Remembering David Kaff 1946-2025
Musician and actor David Kaff has died at 79. He played Viv Savage, the keyboardist for Spinal Tap. I know, I know - this seemed like a Onion article to hear that a member of Spinal Tap has died, but sadly it's true.
Rob Reiner and Kaff in This Is Spinal Tap
Kaff had been a member of Rare Bird from 1969-1975. He was cast in the legendary mockumentary This is Spinal Tap (read my recent review of the re-release here). After the 1984 release, Kaff took part in multiple Spinal Tap appearances including SNL and he played on the band's soundtrack album too. Following the 2022 passing of Ric Parnell, who played drummer Mick Shrimpton, it is bittersweet that the Spinal Tap sequel is being released in September, even if Kaff doesn't appear in it.

Remembering Andrea Gibson 1975-2025
Poet Andrea Gibson has died at 49. They were the Poet Laureate of Colorado.
Gibson and Falley via zoom during IFFBoston's Opening Night in April 2025
Earlier this year saw the film festival premiere of the documentary Come See Me in the Good Light, which documented Gibson and partner Megan Falley as Gibson battles cancer. I saw this at Independent Film Festival Boston in April, where it was the Opening Night Film. Director Ryan White (who I interviewed in 2022) did a Q&A after the screening and via zoom both Andrea and Megan took part in the Q&A. After the documentary ended, it wasn't clear if Gibson was still alive, but to see them appear during the Q&A was emotional to say the least. The doc is scheduled to be released by Apple TV+ later this year and I can not recommend it enough! It is very moving as the film is a meditation on one’s own mortality. But there are some genuinely funny moments. There is also a beautiful message in this about how creating your art can be a means not just of helping you through tough times, but a means of survival.
