Musicians Chime In on Demise of Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show”
- “We are … disgusted by the bootlicking that caused it,” OK Go says
In addition to marking a dangerous milestone in America’s path toward fascism, CBS’ axing of “the Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which hosted performances by David Byrne, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney in its final week, is a huge blow to music-lovers and music-makers.
Here’s what some musicians have had to say since the “Late Show” went dark:
DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS: “(We’d) like to thank Stephen Colbert for being the man you are. A man of rare intelligence and grace, a source of joy and light in these dark times, a man of wisdom and humor when we needed it most. Thank you for what you’ve done and especially for how you’ve gone about doing it.”
PHILIP GLASS: “Thank you, Stephen, for your generosity, for all you give to the entertainment community and the world. To the next chapter.”
BRITTANY HOWARD: “Love you, Stephen. Thank you for being an inspiration to us all.”
I’M WITH HER: “What a wonderful legacy the show has made and we are so honored to have been a part of it.”
MOBY: “Thank you (Stephen Colbert) for, well, everything.”
THE MOUNTAIN GOATS: “Stephen Colbert has always been such a great supporter of us. Thank you for everything.”
OK GO: “We are devastated to see the end of ‘the Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ and disgusted by the bootlicking that caused it. It is no exaggeration to say that Stephen is as good as humans come: he’s truly as kind, brilliant and compassionate as you imagine.”
P!NK: “Stephen Colbert is one of the great ones. Thank you, Stephen. For the laughs, for the truth and for catching us when we were falling. We’re going to miss you.”
RACHEL & VILREY: “We love Stephen Colbert so much. Can't wait to see what brilliance he bestows next.”
BONNIE RAITT: “How insane that the No. 1 show in that time slot is being booted off the air because some in power can’t take a joke or alternative points of view. … Here’s to us all still speaking our truths to power.”
PAUL SHAFFER: “Thank you to Stephen, Louis and the band and the entire ‘Late Show’ staff and crew for continuing our legacy with grace and humor. Keep playing, writing and standing up - though it can feel like it, no one can silence the arts and their impact.“
AARON LEE TASJAN: “I always wanted to play Colbert’s ‘Late Show.’ Sad I won’t get the chance to do that but so grateful for all of the wonderful moments he gave us through the years. A truly noble entertainer if ever there was one.“
JAMES TAYLOR: “Looking back on the decades (Colbert) has given us and on his courageous and inspiring resistance to the corruption and lies of the Trump takeover, I see him as a true patriot. Together with his colleague and friend, Jimmy Kimmel, they are national heroes who are on the front lines in the battle for our American democracy. And hats off, with gratitude and admiration to Bruce Springsteen for putting himself, unambiguously on the line and for taking the flak for making a stand. They inspire us all to stand with them.”
“WEIRD” AL YANKOVIC: “Much love to Stephen and his entire amazing crew, and wishing them the best in whatever their next adventure happens to be.”
