Review: "Mandibles" (2020)

With Mandibles, Quentin Dupieux creates yet another subversive, colorful, and entertaining film. Mandibles follows two best friends Manu (Grégoire Ludig) and Jean-Gab (David Marsais) who find a giant fly in the trunk of a car. This film sets up the appearance of otherworldly, embiggened version of a creature we know and don't always love, which is often used within the horror genre.

Quentin Dupieux subverts expectations with a heartfelt story of friendship, love, and acceptance. The film brings to mind Raising Arizona if the couple was raising a giant fly rather than a stolen baby.

There is a natural charm to Mandibles radiating from the easy chemistry and comedic timing of its leads. The friendship between Manu and Jean-Gab instantly grabbed my attention. I could understand why they are friends and I wanted everything to work out for them, even if their plan involved teaching a giant fly to rob banks for them. Manu and Jean-Gab punctuate their every achievement with a shout of "Toro!" as they interlock their bull-horn

Mandibles twists a tale of bumbling criminals with slacker buddy comedies such as Dumb and Dumber, Bill & Ted, and Wayne's World with a wonderfully weird absurdist humor that comes from befriending a humongous fly. Mandibles is a hilarious comedy with unique and engaging characters brought to life through stellar performances which all highlight the absurdity of the film.

Throughout the film, I was constantly drawn into the emotions of its well-developed story and characters . I wanted to see Manu and Jean-Gab succeed and live a happy life forever with Dominique (the name Jean-Gab chose for his new fly buddy). Mandibles is an emotional and extremely heartwarming film with moments of absurdity and zany comedy.

Through a case of mistaken identity, Manu and Jean-Gab must enter a world in which they do not fit. Similar to the classic screwball comedy, Manu and Jean-Gab are from a lower economic class than the women whose presence they find themselves in. Cecile (India Hair) invites Manu and Jean-Gab to stay with her and her friends, most notably Agnes (Adèle Exarchopoulos).

Dupieux's film brings to mind screwball films such as The Philadelphia Story and Bringing Up Baby through its ridiculous situations bringing people from vastly different social classes into close quarters, causing secrets to be exposed through wonderous comedic moments.

Mandibles highlights the comedic elements of finding yourself in a place where you don't fit in, and in addition to that, you brought a giant fly with you. Manu and Jean-Gab try to hide Dominique, which leads to some of the film's funniest moments and a pitch perfect comedic performance from Adèle Exarchopoulos. She plays Agnes with such a captivating and invigorating energy, fully embracing the absurdity of the film and her character's actions.

David Marsais performance shows just how much Jean-Gab loves Dominique and desperately wants her to stay in their strange, but perfect family unit.

Grégoire Ludig's performance recalls the sincerity of a classic himbo commonly connected to characters who are kind, sweet, goodhearted and a little bit dumb. His performance brings to mind Keanu Reeves as Ted 'Theodore' Logan and Brendan Fraser in most of his 90s comedies. Manu might not be the smartest character, but he has so much heart and Ludig portrays this beautifully.

His kindness and friendship with Jean-Gab and eventually Dominique allows us to feel for him and want this ridiculous and strange criminal plan to work out.

Mandibles is a funny absurdist romp with a heartfelt center. I never expected that the friendship between two men and their pet giant fly could be so moving and sincere. Quentin Dupieux is a wonderful surreal and absurdist filmmaker bringing countless unique stories to life. If you enjoyed the absurdity of Dupieux's horror comedies Deerskin and Rubber, Mandibles should be at the top of your list, even though it examines different blockbuster genres in the form of the buddy comedy and bumbling crime comedy.
