12 Monkeys premiered in New York City on 8 December 1995.

Producer Robert Kosberg persuaded Chris Marker to let him pitch his 1962 short film La Jetée as a feature length science fiction film and Universal purchased the rights and hired David and Janet Peoples to write the screenplay. Terry Gilliam was approached to direct, and accepted due to the "intriguing and intelligent script" (Gilliam said that he had not seen Marker's film when he agreed to direct).

Gilliam wanted Jeff Bridges (who had appeared in Gilliam's 1991 The Fisher King) and Nick Nolte to star, but the studio rejected the idea. Gilliam rejected their counter of Nic Cage and Tom Cruise. Gilliam's suggestion of Bruce Willis was accepted, and then Madeleine Stowe was cast, and then Brad Pitt (who was relatively unknown when he was cast, and who Gilliam originally did not think was right for the role).

12 Monkeys was a commercial and critical success, with Pitt receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
