SCHENECTADY – High comedy The Curious Savage, by John Patrick and directed by Jennifer Van IderStyne, opens Friday, May 5 and runs through Sunday, May 14, at Schenectady Civic Players, 12 South Church Street in Schenectady’s historic Stockade district.
The “funny and heartwarming play” centers around Mrs. Savage who has been left ten million dollars by her husband and wants to make the best use of it, in spite of her step-children’s efforts to have her committed to “bring her to her senses” and thus gain access to her fortune. The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems at times motivated only by greed and dishonesty.
The Curious Savage was first produced in New York by the Theatre Guild and opened October 24, 1950, with the legendary actress Lillian Gish in the role of Mrs. Savage.
The Civic Players cast features Pat Brady (as Mrs. Savage), Patti Noble (as Florence), Autumn Routt (as Fairy May), Laural Hayes (as Mrs. Paddy), Robin MacDuffie (as Jeffrey), David Quinones (as Hannibal), David Rook (as Titus), Joe Fava (as Samuel), Jean Carney (as Lily Belle), Christine Vermilyea (as Miss Willie), and Steve King (as Dr. Emmett).
The Curious Savage runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday (May 5, 6, 7) and Wednesday through Sunday (May 10 through 14). Friday and Saturday curtains are at 8 pm; Wednesday and Thursday curtains are at 7:30 pm; and Sundays are matinees only at 2:30 pm.
Tickets, $20. Order on-line at http://www.civicplayers.org or call (518) 382-2081.
