Old Sorcery | The Escapist (2025)
Kormorg feels a lot different from other Heimat der Katastrophe releases and maybe the one that comes closest to Neptune Towers for me.
Going out on a limb here, so bear with me. When I listen to certain kinds of music, particularly ambient or atmospheric stuff, my brain sometimes translates the sound into a feeling of architecture? Like, the sound creates an idea of space for me. I have no idea if that is something that happens to other people. To my ear, Kormorg is all winding corridors and vaulted ceilings, like a grand, subterranean cathedral. I think it is the mix of airy drones and mystical sounding melodies. “Return of a Warrior” is the standout track for me, but I pretty much love the whole album all the way through, even if the titles of the tracks seem to fail to capture the music’s majesty. Orcs? Really? Nah dude.
Really, really love David Thierree’s album art. Its weird and I can’t quite make sense of it (which seems intentional, in an MC Escher sort of way). I also generally think that fantasy benefits from rocks that float placidly in the air, and extra points if they have faces carved in them.
