Helmet Catch
On this day in 2008, one of the most memorable catches in Super Bowl history took place. With just over a minute left in the game, on 3rd and 5, Giants QB Eli Manning was under tremendous pressure from several Patriots defenders: DEs Richard Seymour and Jarvis Green, and LB Adalius Thomas and then LBs Mike Vrabel and Junior Seau.
Manning miraculously evaded all of them and got off a pass to the seldom-used WR David Tyree. Tyree made a leaping catch and was immediately pulled down by Patriots S Rodney Harrison but managed to secure possession throughout the play by pressing the ball against his helmet as he went down.
The play gained 32 yards for the Giants and gave them a first down with 58 seconds left and four plays later, WR Plaxico Burress would score the winning touchdown that gave the Giants a 17–14 upset win and handed the Patriots their only loss of that season.
Sports editor Adrian Hasenmeyer called the play "an insult to physics and Albert Einstein" while the legendary NFL Films founder Steve Sabol said that the play "...defied logic, history, gravity and just about anything else you care to mention."
Later dubbed the 'Helmet Catch,' many have described it as the greatest catch in Super Bowl history.
