Alexandrite became especially popular amongst monarchists, after the assassination of Alexander II of Russia. They wore rings with it, quite often with a diamond on each side symbolizing the two main acts of Alexander II -- the cancellation of serfdom and the new judicial administration. Today, men's rings with center color stones are a rare sight, and taking into account how scarce natural Alexandrite is, there is a good chance that most of us will never see it set in a man's ring. But have a look at this men's alexandrite ring recently commissioned by a customer of David Wein. It was not possible for us to find a large square alexandrite, so a lot of thought went into the setting to make an oval stone look masculine. And it is one gorgeous Brazilian alexandrite too.

Amethyst is making a rightful return to the forefront of jewelry.

Is purple a Valentine's Day color? Maybe not, but it is the color of romance and passion and this year we can't get enough of all shades of purple.  The gemstone of the February is Amethyst, - variety of quartz which is transparent and light to dark purple in color. And although amethyst is found on almost every continent the dark transparent and clean stones are relatively rare and always in demand. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty. Leonardo Da Vinci wrote that amethyst was able to dissipate evil thoughts and quicken the intelligence.

The blue sapphires from Sri Lanka are also known as Ceylon Sapphires. Ceylon Sapphires are reportedly unique in colour, clarity and lustre compared to the blue sapphires from other places and many consider Sri Lankan sapphires to be among the best in the world.

Top quality alexandrite is very rare indeed and uncommon in modern jewelry because it is hardly ever available and, because it is too expensive for the general public to buy. Even lower quality more included gemstones are expensive and very limited in supply.

We have a confession to make. Alexandrite is our favourite gemstone. We love the stone's heritage, color changing property and unmistakable exclusivity to it. We love to see our alexandrites used in fine jewelry and especially when it is used in engagement rings. Fine quality alexandrites are a lot rarer than diamonds, making engagement ring even more precious and unique. Alexandrite gained popularity when Tiffany's master gemologist, George Frederick Kunz, became fascinated with the stone and set out to create beautiful rings and platinum ensembles between 19th and the 20th century.
