“In another recurring dream, which he first experienced in 1963, he was...walking a dirt road and finding a pond and diving in and swimming til I'd run out of air and at the last moment surfacing inside a cave filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites that were iridescent, I'd wake up peaceful. Wojnarowicz followed up on this one, taking buses into the country, finding a lake or pond, wading in fully dressed, then hitchhiking back to the city. The images of water in his art similarly imply a kind of purification or comforting oblivion. In another dream, he heard the line "This is life–let's swim in it."
