“The Winter Guest”

Alan Rickman and Sharman Macdonald photographed by David Eustace. Sharman Macdonald is a Scottish playwright, screenwriter, and actress. “The Winter Guest” is a 1997 film directed by Alan Rickman in his debut as a director, which stars Phyllida Law and Emma Thompson. The film is based on Sharman MacDonald’s play.

Creative Industries Event - David Eustace

David Eustace is a Scottish photographer and director, who is known for his fashion, celebrity and art photography. His photographs are included in the Scottish national portrait gallery, and the Glasgow museum of modern art. David will be talking to staff and students about his work in the first-floor theatre at 1pm

 This image is from David Eustace’s project called “Highland Heart”. I chose this image because I love the way that you are drawn into the image by a flash of colour and the help of the natural light zoning in on it works perfectly. He has used natural light to take the image and because it is a landscape image he has used depth of field to capture the background as well as the main viewpoint of the house.

We are researching David Eustace today in class as we have been told that on the 11th of January he will be coming to have a talk with staff and students in the new year.

Speaker Report. David Eustace

David enjoys seeing a happy world. A world of joy. He went on to talk about the concept of “Daft Ideas” and their value to us and his life. His life was full of daft ideas that have taken him to where he is today. We have been encouraged to follow those daft ideas we have ourselves, and to enjoy the journey as its as important as the destination. He made the comment of not listening to those doubters out there. That we should listen to our guts and instincts. David talked about his life starting at college to working for magazines in London. During this he explained he did a lot of adverts. He goes on to talking about turning 40 and going to NY. During his time in the USA he worked for Anthropologie. One of the projects he talked about was the $65 dress. The concept behind this project bridged adverts and art. This made Anthropologie nervous. He went on to explain that he wanted to do a road trip called in search of Eustace. This is a town in the USA. He used this time to create a story with his journey. He asked us to be story tellers with our work. To quote “There is no such thing as a daft idea. We don’t know how things will turn out. Just to do it and put in the effort” He advises we create physical folios and to do this often. To create our own work. Self-doubt is normal so relax it shows we care.

My notes from the talk by the truly inpirational David Eustace. You could feel the passion he had for photography, I could listen to him all day long. Nice to get a look at some other stuff he has done. Some of it was surprising, liked his facination for squiggly lines and his images on this subject.

David Eustace

Born in 1961 in Glasgow. David Eustace is a Master photographer and Director his print are held in high regards by a multitude of Exhibitionist world wide with work in the collections of The National Portrait Gallery London. And his many of his prints have graced on the pages of many fashion magazines like vogue.

He grew up in a working class family and was a prison officer before he joined a camera club where he got encouraged to pursue a degree in Film and Television at Napier where he Graduated in 1991.

He does do a lot of work in the Uk but he also works abroad a lot of the time particularly in New York USA. He has also directed a lot of commercials including anti litter campaigns. 

In 2015 he has been appointed to Chancellor of Napier University in Edinburgh. He still does his own work. However, he does take out some of his own time to give speeches at colleges and Universities, inspiring the new generation of photographers.
