Super excited to finally get a chance to crack this obscure David Lindsay novel from the mid 1930’s. Around 15 years ago I stumbled upon a Bison Press reprint of his cult novel Voyage To Arcturus and my mind was blown. Lindsay was a man who wanted to write popular fiction but had a philosophical mind and way too much going on inside to write simple fiction. It would be his strength and his undoing. It’s good to see his work back in print. #rare #book #scifi #horror #davidlindsay https://www.instagram.com/p/CQJ9SonhEOMtkuB_UxxQx9AHsNK3ynQyFMfUAc0/?utm_medium=tumblr
"Suddenly it occurred to her that she was looking at something the existence of which she had never yet realised. It was a part of the structure of the hall, and she must certainly have seen it before, but if so, it had completely escaped her observation. It was a second flight of uncarpeted stairs, leading upwards out of the hall, by the side of the ancient fireplace. It did not strike her that there was anything off about these stairs; they were quite prosaic and real; the only curious circumstance was that hitherto she should have overlooked them in so miraculous a manner." Isbel Loment, discontentedly affianced to the nice-but-dull Marshall Stokes, finds on exploring the mysterious house known as Runhill Court that there are stairs and rooms that should not exist, windows that look out onto strange vistas, and mysterious music heard in an upstairs corridor audible only to a chosen few. She meets the house's owner, Henry Judge, and determined that hers will not be a life half-lived, embarks on a relationship lived in another reality that is more real to her than the world she is forced to live in. Not as good as Lindsay's Sphinx which I read earlier this year, but it suited my mood perfectly for this trip and my own exploration of Walter Scott's "Conundrum Castle", as he christened it, a house with surprises and secrets (including hidden staircases) of its own... #davidlindsay #thehauntedwoman #abbotsford #sirwalterscott #hiddenrooms #secretstaircases #impossiblearchitecture #fiveandahalfminutehallways #fantasy #romanticism #sublime #behindtheveil #weirdliterature #canongateclassics #books #bookstagram #bibliophilia https://www.instagram.com/p/B3pSHB_nYoO/?igshid=1kvhxpso0bg4u
"The Sphinx has asked us her three riddles, in the shape of those dreams; we have failed to understand them, and she has claimed a death." Cocooning myself against the cold with blankets, tea, and David Lindsay's fantastical exploration into the dream-state as a journey of the soul and a glimpse into the future (which the protagonist attempts to record in a series of scientific experiments, the results of which become increasingly more disturbing), all played out against the framework of a domestic melodrama of manners in mid-20s Hampshire during a blazing hot summer. I couldn't put it down. #davidlindsay #sphinx #nodensbooks #fantasy #weirdliterature #deepsleep #dreams #dreamrecorder #twoworldsandinbetween #philosophy #surrealism #portents #prophecies #winterevenings #books #bookstagram #bibliophilia https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs8vE16H5s9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jsb2jmdonrlk
I just saw @mtc_nyc production of #RIPCORD in their very intimate venue at NY City Center Stage 1 & it was well worth the trip into the city. Having spent nearly 3 years working in an assisted living community similar to the fictional Bristol Palace, I am familiar with how they operate from the inside out and applaud #DavidLindsay-Abaire & #DavidHydePierce on thier portrayl of an upbeat community. It's my experience that Assisted Living Communities get a bad rap and people view the residents who live in them as being on their last legs of life, just sitting, withering away and waiting to die. This was not the case in this community. Yes there were the common complaints about the food, living situations and physical ailments, but #MarylouiseBurke & #HollandTaylor do not meet the qualifications to be your steriotypical resident, nor their families. This was my first time at Stage 1 & I felt the play worked well there. As an audience member, I felt I was sitting inside of their apartment watching the story unfold. Without giving much away, you will be surprised how many different sets can be created within such a small place. By the end of the play, I wished Marilyn & Abby were my grandparents. I'm not sure though about having Colleen as my mom, similar to #RachelDratch characters on #SNL she has a few loose screws, but don't we all? The entire cast and creative team were so kind and accommodating after the performance. You could really feel that sense of family. Break a leg Tuesday night! ... or should I say try NOT to break a leg, but if you do, I hope the rehab place you go to is just as nice as Bristol Palace :)
