this is actor @sergiohortega . Supposedly he's 6.2" but he seemed way more imposing. Maybe it was his personality, his openness, his HAIR. I can't put my finger on it. The one thing he didn't have in his wardrobe was a really simple black t-shirt. So I was rifling through some backup wardrobe and I call out what size t shirt do you wear, knowing it's going to be an x-large or something. "Anything" he says. "what"? I say. "Anything" he repeats. But... I ask "no, you're like an extra large right"? He says "yeah, sure". I say "crap, I only have a small." He says "small is great". And I'm like "what are you talking about"? Sergio says "DAVID. I’M AN ACTOR.". And I laugh incredulously asking "what are you talking about"?!! And he says "I'm an ACTOR, I can ACT a size small - give me the small David!!". So this photo is of a giant man brilliantly acting the roll of size small. He is half Persian, half Spanish, he speaks Farsi and Italian and English and I think he said he can fake Arabic and I believe him. He has an Australian passport because he grew up there for a while, moved to Italy for many years, then to Canada, and finally the US. He loves his wife. He melted when he spoke of her. I asked him what he loved about her. He was quiet for a minute and then said softly "She listens to me...". This is actress, filmmaker and singer @daniellarabbani . More than anything, this photo is a demonstration of how it felt to be in a room with her. She's open, she's playful, she's hilarious, she's honest. On what is sacrificed pursuing acting, she says "not spending more time with my baby, Ness. There’s a big part of me that would like to be there every second of every day but if I believe that a happy mom makes a happy kid, and I do, I’ve got to pursue my craft. In order to be a whole me, I’ve gotta put my best foot forward as a professional and sometimes that means not playing with the babe. All in all, I think it’s a sacrifice worth making because acting allows me an outlet to be all of me and when I bring that home, we all win.". And the reverse is also true. She said that the very work that prevents her from spending every hour with Ness is itself enriched by her relationship to him. Watching him grow sustains and inspires her outside her acting work. "His wonder at the world's details. The things I take for granted. It reminds me how magnificent we humans are". Ashley Barnett is a PhD law student and adjunct professor who flew into NYC for headshots with her mum & husband. Incidentally, one of the best things about people bringing their moms into shoots is the inevitability of that mom telling us how awesome their offspring is. Seriously, it's beautiful and it always happens and it always makes us happy. Ashley's mom spent her life in education, and instilled it's importance early in Ashley and her twin brother. As Ashley went through some of the most diverse public schools in the country, she became acutely aware that not everyone around her was lucky enough to live in a home with such strong academic support and resources. She saw students falling behind in their reading skills and realized that they were losing a "critical bridge to success in school, work, and life". She knew that "nearly one-third of our nation’s children read below minimally proficient grade level or are unable to read at all. In fact, many students do not even have a book at home.". So that's her passion, and it's one that is deeply tied to her faith. That if kids can't read, they can't learn. If they can't learn, their job opportunities become dramatically limited. And that cycle continues into the next generation and the next and the next. Ashley says "By continuing my involvement with students, implementing innovative collaborative curriculum, teaching at law schools and universities, mentoring high-risk youth, pursuing unique opportunities to meet with philanthropic leaders and government officials, serving on nonprofit and education boards, recruiting volunteers, and lobbying for legislature that promotes increased funding and the implementation of academic support and literacy on the state and national platforms, I hope to honor my calling and pursue my passion of giving the gift of reading to many children through meaningful actions." headshots nyc

Galen Ryan Kane was born in baltimore. When he was about 2 months old, he was was taken to St Thomas in the Virgin Islands to be raised by his aunt. He's a 2016 Yale MFA with a deep musicality to his voice. i always think about Miles Davis any time I encounter a voice like his, one that plays softly but with a lot of power. Soft but full. He's thoughtful and cares deeply about what is happening in our world right now. He did this monologue from King Lear a few years ago while at Yale. It was Edmund the Bastard. He says that what interested him personally was Edmund's questioning of the significance of his illegitimacy. Why is he labeled as illegitimate. He had no choice in how he came into the world. Galen goes on "And... I guess on a deeper level, what's wrong with being born out of fire? What's wrong with being born out of passion" He thinks for a moment, and he adds "What's wrong with being black?". I asked him what he wanted to avoid as he grew older: "I should like to avoid bitterness of the heart, double mindedness, nor should I like to find myself having lost faith in the laboring of good works. Finding the sense in balance, discernment and acceptance of the uncontrollable have kept me in form, towards that peace I need to live for the work." headshots nyc

@evanenannik is an actor, singer, and dancer finishing his last year at @bostonconservatory. I’m a little rushed so I can’t say much but one of my favorite things about him is the specificity of his passions and ambitions. It’s an industry where you’re daily reminded that you have little power over the quantity and quality of the work you’ll get. And the result is often actors who say “I’ll do anything, I just want to work”. But few of us want to hire someone who says “I just want to work”. We want creativity with a point of view. She started a premium dog food company called "pawsitiveimpacts" that's focused on health and wellness for your pets, with a business model that donates a portion of that same dog food to shelters. She spent a recent summer working abroad in an effort to end human trafficking, an ongoing commitment for her. She's visited over 20 countries (often as a volunteer), she sky dives... she's basically a super hero masquerading among us as a normal human being. Michael @buhninie called us up a week before the shoot with a massive bruised face. Tubing accident. We saw pictures. Was beer involved? Unconfirmed. Suspicions remain. We should have canceled. He insisted on shooting. I was sure he was going to be a lunatic. He wasn't. He healed unnaturally quickly, he's charming as f*ck and charismatic for miles. I have this hunch that he got away with a lot of sh*t as a teenager. Possibly still. But he's also humble, unafraid of diving in, unafraid of failing, and eager to dive right back in. @annamalskaya and I loved him, and we KNEW we would see him on screen soon. We were right (patting ourselves on the back with smug smiles). He's booked a tv gig, and he's filming movies months into this thing.... Truly a wonderful guy in so many ways.
