#3492 - Daviesia rhombifolia

First described in 1844 by Carl Daniel Friedrich Meissner, a Swiss botanist who did an incredible amount of work on Australian flora.

A spreading shrub endemic to the SW of Australia, from the very SW corner and fanning upwards into the Wheatbelt.

#3231 - Daviesia horrida - Prickly Bitter-Pea 

One of Australia's many native peas, amply demonstrating that if you wade incautiously through our undergrowth YOU WILL REGRET.

First formally described by Swiss botanist Carl Meissner in Johann Georg Christian Lehmann's Plantae Preissianae in 1844, from an unpublished description by Austrian botanist Balthazar Preiss.

Widespread in the moister parts of SW WA as shrubby understorey in forested hills. Rogers Reserve near Wongan Hills township might not have been on the biggest hill of the aforementioned vertical relief, but it's not flat. Probably right on the edge of the rainfall the species will tolerate, though.

#1719 - Daviesia physodes - Phoenix Bitter-pea

Another of Australia’s ludicrously diverse peas, and as you can probably guess the genus is most diverse in Western Australia. This particular species, which is one of over a hundred in the genus (named after the Welsh botanist Hugh Davies), grows from Geraldton to Augusta. 

Those aren’t leaves, by the way, but tough flattened stems that serve the same purpose. It’s a common drought adaption among Australian plants.

#3232 - Daviesia divaricata - Marno

Even more unpleasant to stroll through than D. horrida. A low, spreading or erect and bushy shrub with phyllodes reduced to small, triangular scales, and branches forked and ending in sharp points. Fall into this and you'll be well and truly forked.

Mostly found along the western coastline of WA. Wongan Hills is surprisingly far inland for the species. It grows well in sand, sandy loam, among rocky outcrops and in free draining soils, over both limestone and laterite. The soil in Rogers Reserve is mostly laterite.

#1720 - Daviesia sp. - Bitter-pea

A different Daviesia, this one with true leaves, but with the same defences used by many Australian shrubs - i.e. a propensity to the f*** out of you.

This one was growing in Hammond Park, in Perth, rather than down south, but if I’m going to cover the diversity of Australian peas, which I’ve somehow managed to almost entirely miss over the years, I may as well start with one in the same genus as the Phoenix Bitter-Pea.
