1.78, Pt. 1: No Mistake (KCLKF)
“Your granny didn’t need to make me a full breakfast,” Kass wrinkled her nose.
“Are you kidding? Biscuits and gravy is her specialty. You’re in for a real treat,” Davis replied.
“Then why aren’t you eating some?” Kass asked.
“Oatmeal’s just fine,” Davis shrugged. “Have it every morning.”
“I didn’t know biscuits and gravy was on the menu here,” Kass said, picking up her fork.
“It’s on the secret menu,” Davis nudged her playfully.
Gravy dripped from her fork and into her hair.
“Hey!” she protested, just as she heard her name.

1.77 Nice Day (KCLKF)
“Hey!” Davis interrupted her thoughts, jerking his head back up. “Have you ever been to Evansdale?”
“What? Evansdale?” she wrinkled her nose.
“Yeah, there’s this great little roadside market,” Davis rushed the words excitedly. “…where Granny gets pumpkins every Halloween and in the summers, there’s this place where you can pay to pick your own produce and stay in the cabins the same night.”
“That’s cool,” Kass shrugged as she stood.
“We could pick up some strawberries and fresh tomatoes and our own herbs for homemade spaghetti sauce, and oh! Avocados for homemade guacamole, and then we could cook in the little kitchen in the cabins,” Davis said, his cheeks turning pink. “That is…” he brushed his hands as if shaking something loose. “…if you’re free for dinner.”
“Davis, isn’t Evansdale like three hours away?” Kass frowned.

1.68, Pt 2: Irresponsibly Mad (KCLKF)
“Call me irresponsible,” Davis began singing as his fingers moved over the cello. “Call me unreliable. Throw in undependable too,” he nodded to Beau, who joined him on double bass.
It was as though everyone else faded away, and it was just Kass and the music.
“Girl, I’m not too clever I…” Davis smiled, looking right at Kass. “I just adore you.”
This brought a well-deserved whoop from the audience.
“Call me unpredictable. Tell me I’m impractical,” his sweet baritone wavered as Kass lifted her hands to her face, toying at her lip with her fingers.
“Oh gawd!” Ayesha joined her, grabbing Kass’ arm. “He’s so dreamy!” she swooned.
“It’s undeniably true… That I’m irresponsibly mad for you,” Davis warbled.

1.66, Pt. 1: Insta-Connection (KCLKF)
“Would you care for something to drink?”
“I… uh…” Kass flushed, and covered her mouth as she swallowed her latest bite. “…don’t drink.”
“Then I’m sure you won’t mind watching me drink,” Davis tossed back, teasingly, as he reached for what appeared to be a juice box.
“Does it have… alcohol?” she swallowed a soft burp.
“No, it’s non-alcoholic,” he replied. “Takaharan white peach soda. Do you want to try?” he reached out and handed her a box.
“Yeah… sure…” she shrugged, feeling stupid for thinking he was offering her ‘juice.’
The first sip was cool and refreshing, and she bobbed her head in agreement when Davis asked if she liked it.
“But you don’t drink,” he smirked, snatching the box away.
“Hey!” she protested, and he immediately returned the drink.
“I’m giving you a hard time,” he put his hands up.

Interlude: Hope (Davis) (KCLKF)
It was a hanging fern. She intended it for the guest house, but somehow he felt it would fit better here. Her cheeks turned pink when she called it a housewarming present and told him it represented new life and new beginnings. She had no idea how much that meant to him. He stepped over to the window, snapping the blinds open, and brushed his fingers across one of the fern’s delicate fronds.
This is a new life for me. For us. He thought absently. He really wasn’t sure how long it would last. He didn’t know if he could go back there – to Bayou. If his heart would let him… if his past would leave him be. He could relocate to the university there. It was early enough in the medical program. He already looked into the logistics, and even spoke to his senior physician about applying for transfer.
This is serious. I want to be serious. He couldn’t help but feel like it was too much, too fast, but his heart said it was just right. Kass made him feel safe. She had an ease about her, despite her awkwardness, something he could sink into and feel at home with. He missed her. He would always miss her. But Kass was different. She felt real and average and right now, he needed some real and average was just right.
Then why couldn’t he let go?

1.62 Ice Cream Surprise (KCLKF)
“Haven’t you been here before?”
She shook her head and swallowed hard. A truck stop? Mamma would have a cowplant!
“I’ve lived in the Valley my whole life and I’ve never been out here,” she replied, eyeing a woman dressed in all pink staring off into space, muttering one word over and over again.
“You’re in for a treat,” he grinned.
She shook the cobwebs of judgment from her head and offered a weak smile. “Okay.”
“You’re safe,” he squeezed her hand. “They won’t bite.”
