While it was not possible this year to attend any ANZAC Day ceremonies, it was wonderful to see people out in front of their houses with candles, listening to the service simulcast from the Australian War Memorial, and paying their respects for the #lightupthedawn initiative - driveway ‘Dawn Service’. It was a great way to keep our distance yet come together on our nation’s most sacred day. One of our neighbours even played ‘the Last Post’ on their trumpet which was very moving. My husband did a wonderful job setting up our little War Memorial complete with his grandparent’s medals, his slouch hat, his 2 Cav ‘Courage’ flag, Aussie flags, and flame. To all the Australian and New Zealand defence force members - fallen, retired, past and currently serving - including our grandparents, friends and family - for your courage, honour, bravery, your service, and continuing to foster the bonds of mateship born at Gallipoli that is so integral to our national identity and who we are as individuals - Aussies and Kiwis alike - we salute you. For the Fallen (4th Stanza) They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
