Chilly start to the weekend with 6am memorial service for Anzac Day.
Every single household that I could see came out before dawn, lit a candle, and stood in their driveway observing a minute's silence for ANZAC Day this morning, and it made me choke up a little. The likelihood that anyone in my street would have - in normal circumstances - gone to an actual Dawn Service is low, but because no one in the country could go to a Dawn Service this year, every single household I could see came out at dawn and lit a candle.
Hearing the Last Post echoed up and down my street as all the families live streamed the service from their phones while the sun cracked over the horizon and magpies welcomed the dawn was so touching.
This has been by far the most special ANZAC Service I've ever taken part in.
Lest We Forget
Hey, if you are doing a driveway dawn service, would you mind recording and posting it?
Its going to be the only ANZAC day dawn service under isolation, and some musicians will be playing the last post.
It is a uniquely historic dawn service.
I'm planning on doing some recording too.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest We Forget

Thank you to all service men and women for your courage and sacrifice to our country and those that reside within.

- The Ode of Remembrance, from the poem For the Fallen, by Laurence Binyon, read at ANZAC Day remembrance ceremonies since 1921.
I attended the chill pre-dawn ANZAC Day remembrance service at Irwin Barracks with veterans and gorgeous young service people. Looking around at all those youthful faces, full of life, it is sad to think of so many like them, cut down. It was a lovely service, opening with bagpipes and closing with Reveille after the Ode, the Last Post and two minute’s silence. The young singer was very good; it felt wrong not to applaud. Afterwards, we grabbed a banjo from a tent and went to the mess for Milo and to warm up.
Last year we walked the fields of Flanders and The Somme, retracing the steps of fallen great-uncles. One hundred years after WWI, the fields were sunny and peaceful and poppies were blooming, then, just like that, Rob bent down and picked up a bullet out of the chalky soil. Lest We Forget.
I am now headed to the IV Suite for my Remicade infusion, while the kids are off to watch and participate in the march in the city.
