Day Eighty-Six
Mrs. T and I have several students who are finding our book paper challenging because they thought they could get through it without actually reading the book. We have one student who has, from day one, insisted that he does not read. Period.
But! Said student needs to pass our classes to play sports. Said student has realized he can’t pass if he doesn’t do this paper. So said student has spent every single day reading, and was able to finish Jay Bahadur’s incredibly intricate The Pirates of Somalia this morning. WOOHOO!!!!!
He stayed after to outline and begin drafting so that he can get back on schedule, too. When I went to Mrs. T’s room to ask her something, she shared that he’d just told her how proud he was that he’d finished the book. I, quite genuinely, got to turn to him and say, “I’m proud of you too.” He beamed.
It’s not everyday a joyous moment like that comes along, so I’m going to treasure it.
Teaching Civics wasn’t as dicey as it could have been. We chatted a bit about the current political situation- and, yes, there were predictable cracks about those allegations Buzzfeed published- but then we went back to work studying the Civil Rights Movement. I’d left them hanging on the fate of the Freedom Riders last class, so there was stuff they wanted to know (always nice for me when that happens). I mentioned in a previous entry that most of my students knew very little about this part of history because we live in an area that was rather isolated from it. So now they’re taking in all this information, and it’s definitely reshaping how they think about modern race relations. Where before they didn’t understand where some of the tension was coming from, now they do, and that, I think, is a great thing.
The semester’s almost over, so if that’s their last takeaway from my class, I’m going to treasure that, too.
Her mother had always told her
of the women who'd come before,
stalwart in their stride
and foolish in their pride.
Blessed as a chosen Clan
their power had grown with time
until a drought robbed them
of a generational prodigy.
Over generations they fervently pleaded
for a return to the strength they knew,
for the luxury it brought them,
their powerless progeny multiplying rapidly.
After many years of toiled hands,
a girl was born, marked as such
that her price lifted one spawn
from the curse of Torsan.

Day Eighty-Six
Hotel. Worlds of Fun. Friends. Family. Food. This weekend has given me a glimpse of what it will be like to go back to school. Kinda hard, kinda anxiety-inducing, but I have friends around me and so many people who support me, and I will enjoy myself. Sometimes it might be forced, but others it will come naturally. There will be tears, and for so many reasons. I trust in God, Lord of the Universe, Lord of my heart, and He will continue to carry me.

Me and my coworker went to Starbucks today; I wanted to thank her after she had helped me so much. We had a long conversation, and it was a lot of fun! I appreciate how kind and nonjudgmental she is. I got paid and that was great. Then I went to see J and give him a quick kiss before I went home. It was a good day.

Today was a great day. I felt really productive, especially at work. I really feel like I’m earning my pay! My trainer is still an incredibly patient angel, and I would like to thank her with starbucks. J gets back tomorrow, and I’m so excited to see him. I am hoping to get some alone time with him, fingers crossed!
