PRE-PROJECT : CITY TOUR XIAN CITY WALL AND DAYAN PAGODA

Since I came to China earlier, my project started a week after I arrived. In this week, some exchange participants already came and we started the welcoming party. Before the welcoming party, I already met Ikram from Morocco. We have already talked before we both arrived in China. She liked Korean things and a big fan of a Korean boy band, so we share the same interest. We went to the welcoming party together and met the other EPs in the Youth Hotel. The welcoming party was great, we had a chit-chat, and danced the roll call.

The next day, we went to Xi’an City Wall, one of the most famous places in Xi’an. If there’s no city wall, there’s no Xi’an. I didn’t know how to get there, they just told me to take the subway and get off at the Yongningmen station. But, because I was new in this city, I was afraid to get lost so I took a taxi instead. The driver stopped in a place and I didn’t know how to get to the Yongningmen gate of City Wall. I saw the gate from my place but I had no idea how to get in because of no crossing. I walked around to see the cross to the gate but I find nothing. Then, I saw some downstairs to underground and I realized I was so stupid because the only way to get there was from the underground. It took me around 10 minutes to see it. *smh*

The other EPs had already arrived at the gate and we bought the ticket using our student card to get a half price. I was not a student anymore but I used mine and they accepted it XD some of us already planned to took a bike ride around the wall so we rent the bike. I forget the price, but I think it’s 40 Yuan for the bike and 200 Yuan for the deposit. They will give the 200 Yuan back after we finished our ride for 90 minutes. It’s only me, Christin from Germany, and Sjoerd from Netherlands who rode the bike. For a short girl like me, the bike was a bit too high so Christin offered to change with hers but it’s the same thing. The problem was in me not the bike XD But it’s okay I kept riding with my skirt on and tried my best not to fall down. The weather was not too hot and I could feel the wind. The city wall was so big so we couldn’t finish the whole round because of something and stopped at the South Gate.

We finished the ride and had lunch. Luckily, a Chinese student helped me to find a halal restaurant to get my food and brought it back to the restaurant where the others waited in. While waiting for our food, we talked about Islam and he was so curious about everything. During our talk, a Chinese little boy approached me and said something in Chinese, the only word I understood is ‘Jiejie’ which meant sister. I didn’t know how to answer and then he said, ‘Yeah you know, we are Asian, we look the same, so he thought you are Chinese.’

He took us to play a board game after lunch. I had no idea what kind of game was it, but he insisted to say that it’s fun. So in China, there’s a place, restaurant-like, but especially to play games together with friends or family. They will give us some board games like monopoly, snake & ladder, and something like those to play. Each person only needs to pay 50 Yuan to play everything we want and get free drinks and food. We could order the drink as much as we want. He chose some games for us and tried his best to explain how to play it. The one who loses, had to drink a punishment drink. Sjoerd was always lost so he had to drink it. But after some games, I changed my seat with him and it’s my turn to lose. The drink was horrible.

The board game ended and I needed to pray, so he kindly helped me to ask a room in that place for me to pray. I prayed and we headed to Dayan Pagoda after that. We met the other EPs there and watched the fountain show, the biggest fountain show in Asia. It’s always crowded there and again, because of my height, I couldn’t see it clearly and all I saw were people’s head. *smh*

I arrived in my hostel a little bit late than before, but again, two Chinese students kindly sent me to my subway station. In the next day, we went to a Chinese traditional school. The school located on the first floor of a building, I thought it’s an apartment. Most of the students were in kindergarten age, so you know how energetic they’re. My first sight in this school was a little boy, wearing a blue shirt, and hella cute. I sat near him, tried to talk with him in the only Chinese phrases I knew. We had a country introduction at that time. Before my turn, this little boy, named Brian, sat in my lap and I hugged him. I caressed his cheek and pinched it gently. And all in a sudden, he kissed my cheek. Oh God this kid was too adorable :3 Anyway, we also had a Chinese book reading and calligraphy. All of the food in this school were so healthy. No meat. Only vegetables, fruits, and no cold water! It’s warm water that they served. I love it!

We visited that school only for one day. OH! In the morning before we all went to this school, we went to a Chinese Martial Arts center to learn some Taichi. I thought, no one really focused on the Taichi class as we did that just for fun XD But seeing some women and men showed their skill on this, we were really impressed. There’s a Taichi teacher asking us to pull him with all power we had, but no one succeed in doing so. See, what an inner-power he had!
