When Dean bursts into his life, Cas can't help but be drawn to him despite his conviction that he won't let himself get close to anyone again. He can't take finding someone just to lose them. The problem is—he can't resist.
Falling for Dean is as easy as breathing. In a dangerous world that threatens to consume everyone, Cas must overcome his fear of being hurt and the looming possibility of loss to remain with Dean.
Is loving Dean really worth the risk?
This is such an interesting but perfect blend of an atmospheric post-apocalyptic setting with, well, let’s be honest, a significant amount of smut. The worldbuilding is brief but impressive, with just enough reveal of backstory to situate the current events without dragging them down. Mostly, it serves to deepen the characterizations and to heighten the tension in the developing relationship between Dean and Cas-- if they might die tomorrow, is it really the best time to be falling in love? Despite some initial hesitation, they fall into a pattern of last-night-alive type encounters, all of which are a delight to read. Of course, the feelings start to creep in, complicated by the dangerous lives they lead and the awareness that they could die at any moment. The joy they find in each other is made all the sweeter for that knowledge, and it’s lovely to read as it deepens. Based on a gorgeous art prompt from c-kaeru, this is a story about finding hope in a bleak world and holding tightly to whatever happiness crosses your path, and even though it’s relatively short, it leaves enough space to imagine a good future for Dean and Cas.
