President Donald Trump’s top television regulator warned late-night and daytime hosts that they need to give political candidates equal time when booking guests — a move that brought renewed objections that the administration is treading on free speech. Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr issued regulatory guidance Wednesday directing broadcasters to provide political candidates with equal time on morning and late-night shows, specifically dinging programs “motivated by partisan purposes.” Carr singled out “The View” last fall as a particular concern when teasing such a requirement. His comments followed high-profile threats to broadcasters airing Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show on ABC. On the eve of the 2024 election, Carr also criticized “Saturday Night Live” for alleged evasion of the equal time rule when it featured then-Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris — prompting NBC to give Trump air time on NASCAR and NFL events.

“For years, legacy TV networks assumed that their late night & daytime talk shows qualify as ‘bona fide news’ programs — even when motivated by purely partisan political purposes,” Carr wrote in an X post Wednesday. “Today, the FCC reminded them of their obligation to provide all candidates with equal opportunities.” President Donald Trump also waded into the change on Wednesday, sharing a headline on Truth Social warning the FCC was going after “The View” and Jimmy Kimmel using the equal time rule. Carr shared the post on his X feed. Daniel Suhr, a conservative lawyer who heads the Center for American Rights and has been largely aligned with Carr’s agenda, cheered the move and suggested it could affect hosts such as Stephen Colbert and Kimmel.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr announces a politically-motivated investigation into ABC's The View over 'serious questions' about its alleged "news value"

Brendan Carr is shedding some light on the FCC's ongoing "investigation" into The View. The Trump administration's Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair said in a Tuesday, April 28 interview on The Katie Miller Podcast that the FCC has "raised serious questions" with the long-running ABC talk show. Carr previously announced in February that the agency was exploring “an enforcement action" against the show after it welcomed James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for Senate in Texas, as a guest. The View had reportedly been under investigation for potentially violating the FCC's Equal Time Rule, a restriction that forced broadcasters to provide commensurate airtime to opposing candidates, if requested.

"They are asserting that The View is what the statute calls a 'bona fide' news program. And if you're a bona fide news program under the law, you actually don't have to comply with equal time requirements," said Carr, 47. "They're asserting that they're bona fide news just like, I don’t know, Meet The Press used to be, or something like that. There's obviously questions have been raised about whether they are, in fact, bona fide news." He added, "We've asked them to file a petition at the FCC to try to get some clarification on that. And we'll see where that goes... I think there's a lot of questions have been raised." [...] A network source told PEOPLE in February that the panel show regularly hosts sitting leaders and political candidates from across the political spectrum to discuss current events, which is consistent with how The View has operated for years.

‘Access Hollywood’ Canceled Along With ‘Karamo’ and ‘Steve Wilkos’ as NBCU Ends Syndicated Production

The company will continue to distribute library content, but will end production of first-run syndicated programming in a strategic shift.

NBCUniversal will no longer produce first-run syndicated TV programming, ending production of shows like Access Hollywood, Access Live, Karamo and The Steve Wilkos Show in a major strategic shift for the company. Karamo and Steve Wilkos have both completed production, with the new episodes that have been taped airing through the summer. Access Hollywood and Access Live will continue production through the summer before ending their run.

“NBCUniversal is making changes to our first-run syndication division to better align with the programming preferences of local stations,” said Frances Berwick, chairman of Bravo & Peacock unscripted for NBCUniversal, in a statement. “The company will remain active in the distribution of our existing program library and other off-network titles, while winding down production of our first-run shows. These shows have provided audiences with great talk and entertainment content for many years and we’re very proud of the teams behind them.”

[...] The decision to essentially shut down syndicated production comes a month after the company announced that The Kelly Clarkson Show would end its run later this year.

Talk shows in general have been coming under both financial and competitive pressure, with rising costs, waning demand and increased competition from other platforms. Video podcasts in particular have filled some of the gap, picking up more celebrity interviews, investigating true crimes and tackling many of the same subjects as their TV predecessors at a fraction of the price. [...] The company will continue to distribute its existing program library to stations and other platforms that want it, including titles like Dateline, Law & Order, Chicago PD, Maury, Jerry Springer, Steve Wilkos and Karamo.

On the heels of The Kelly Clarkson Show ending, NBCUniversal will end their first-run syndication production at the end of the current TV season for their remaining NBCU properties: Access Hollywood, Access Live, The Steve Wilkos Show, and Karamo.

NBCU’s syndication division will remain for the distribution of its existing program library, including Dateline, Maury, and Jerry Springer.

‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ to End After Seven Seasons in Syndication

The show will continue production on episodes to air through the fall.

Kelly Clarkson’s tenure as a daytime talk show host is coming to an end. NBCUniversal and Clarkson announced Monday that The Kelly Clarkson Show will end after its current season. Production on season seven will continue as planned, with episodes airing through the fall. In a statement, Clarkson said she made the decision to step away from the show to “prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives.” She has two children, ages 11 and 9, with former husband Brandon Blackstock, who died in August 2025 at age 48. “I have been extremely fortunate to work with such an outstanding group of people at The Kelly Clarkson Show, both in Los Angeles and New York,” Clarkson said. “There have been so many amazing moments and shows over these seven seasons. I am forever grateful and honored to have worked alongside the greatest band and crew you could hope for, all the talent and inspiring people who have shared their time and lives with us, all the fans who have supported our show and to NBC for always being such a supportive and incredible partner. “Because of all of that, this was not an easy decision, but this season will be my last hosting The Kelly Clarkson Show. Stepping away from the daily schedule will allow me to prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives. This isn’t goodbye. I’ll still be making music, playing shows here and there and you may catch me on The Voice from time to time … you never know where I might show up next. But for now, I want to thank y’all so much for allowing our show to be a part of your lives, and for believing in us and hanging with us for seven incredible years.” [...] Clarkson will continue hosting the remainder of the 2025-26 season, with some guest hosts mixed in as well.
