The smallest creature, the one on the end, tilts their head curiously. They seem to flit in and out of the shadows cast by the foliage above, and Charles thinks he may have missed them entirely if he didn't know to look in the first place. “We do not come to present a case to you, but a challenge.” “A test!” Sparky — the name Charles has given the fire-y looking fae — roars. Charles bristles, both from the sentiment and from the strange sensation of an uncomfortable warmth blasting into his face. He positions himself in front of Edwin, his hand brushing against the sword at his hip. “Oi, who are you to give us a bloody test?” “The real question, little one,” Splashy, the sort of watery one, murmurs languidly, “is who are you to refuse?” x Charles and Edwin are challenged to a test of truth.

“Well,” said Edwin as he looked down at the owl-shaped familiar. “That wasn’t so bad.” 

Charles groaned and pushed himself to his feet. “Speak for yourself,” he grumbled, good-naturedly. “They really packed a punch.”

At that point, Crystal burst through the door and rushed to their side. “Did it work?” Then she seemed to notice the owl in the middle of the magic circle and grinned. “Nice.”

The owl was a rather large eagle owl and looked awfully menacing. Its eyes were a magical purple rather than a natural yellow or orange. Marks had been gouged into the floor with its massive talons, but it wasn’t damaging the rest of the church so Edwin didn’t care about that. For a long moment, it held Edwin’s gaze in a horrid glare until, finally, it blinked. Still, the trapped owl did not seem eager to help.

“So, uh,” said Crystal, turning to Edwin. “Can you speak to owls?”

Edwin scoffed. “Don’t be ridiculous, Crystal.”

The tall gentleman thanked the detectives and their psychic medium consultant for their hard work. He also left a paper bag with ‘something extra for their trouble’, as he called it.

As it turned out, the ‘something extra’ was a bottle full of amber liquid.

“Whisky? But you won’t even be able to taste it, right?” Crystal asked, examining the non-readable label of the bottle.

“Well, the client said that it is special - apparently, he was a connoisseur during his life, and he’d spent quite a part of his afterlife rummaging the world for something that he would be able to taste… According to what he said, it kept all the qualities of the original drink.
