My first trip to Washington DC wont be my last.
I spent 2.5 days in DC and felt like I'd really only scratched the surface. I also managed to coincide my trip with the Government shut down, so there was no entering of the galleries and landmarks to be had. Then again, perhaps that was a good thing as I already felt time crunched!
My highlights are;
Drinks in the W rooftop bar, it overlooks the White House and it was the perfect spot to spend my first night
Georgetown was super pretty to walk around, clean and flower filled
My hotel The George on Capital Hill was fantastic, especially their free Wine Hour at 5pm and their free bike programme
Which brings me to biking around the sites, it was absolutely fantastic, I covered a lot of ground and still got to take time to sit and take it all in whenever the mood took me
The restaurants I ate at were exceptional, DC Coast and Estadio a really great Tapas place
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception was absolutely beautiful and felt very spiritually significant
Rock Creek park - so pretty in Fall
Dusk / sunset on a clear day meant simply stunning lighting covering the Capital, glad I stayed an extra night
My only small complaint is that the traffic was hideous. I really should have used the trains (but I didn't, I just kept feeling annoyed by the traffic instead!).
Next time I go there, I'm going to make it some time in Spring, apparently the Tidal Basin fills with Cherry Blossoms. It was pretty in fall but I'm thinking Spring will be spectacular. And maybe I'll even get to go inside somewhere besides the Church then too!
