Background: Zaynah Rabah was trained from an early age by her parents, uncle, aunt, and grandparents to continue their line of sacred, powerful warriors. From her mother’s side they came from a powerful line of brujas de sangre, Blood Witches. However, Zaynah’s ancestors and her mother were only able to control their own blood, having to cut their wrists or any part of their body so they could manipulate it, but she was an exception. Zaynah is able to control her own and other people’s blood— even when it’s inside their bodies.
To have both of her parent’s abilities had mostly been the reason why her grandfather arranged the marriage between her parents. They wanted to have a strong heir, more preferably a son, but instead they had her. That didn’t stop them from training her mercilessly, having her childhood stolen from her, having spent it all in her harsh training to take her father’s place and continue their sanctified lineage.
When she was 12 her father deemed her worthy of being able to have their sacred Scimitar bestowed upon her. However, when the ceremony began and she was about to be handed it, her father swiftly used it to make a surprise attack resulting in her scar on her left eye. She was scolded by him and the rest of her family for not being prepared because a true Rabah would have been able to know how to react to the unexpected and that it had been the reason why her father tested her that way.
It was on her 13th birthday when her family decided to do another test on her, one that was unlike the rest. And it ended terribly with all of her family members dead except for her. She had enough of her family's abuse and when they had all surprised attacked her, they did not expect her to be so skilled enough to slaughter them all. But as she accomplished it, she wasn’t really conscious of what she was doing, it was like a blur in her mind and she only realized what she had done once it was over. And for the first time, she was finally free from them and was able to make her own independent decisions, or so she thought.
The League of Assassins were quick to discover Zaynah's feats and Talia al Ghul offered her to join, seeing her as a potential future wife for her son. Since then, Zaynah had become one of the few skillful, important Shadows/Assassins in the league that the Al Ghul family trusted and saw highly of. Though, at first, Damian was the only one to not like her so quickly. He saw her as a competition until he started to realize that the feelings that he had for her were so much more than what he believed they were.
When Damian was finally able to meet his father for the first time and experience what kind of amazing man her mother had always told him he was, Talia ordered Zaynah to keep watch of him as he did. She was supposed to return frequently with any news of how her son was doing with his father. And as Zaynah watched Damian with his new family and home, she couldn’t help but silently long for the same thing since the deaths of her own.
Zaynah slowly falls for him more as she keeps an eye on him, purposely telling Talia good news so that Damian can keep that happiness he has with his father. A couple months later, Damian figured out what she was doing and called out to her as she hid somewhere in the darkness of where he was. It’s then they discuss a little bit of what happened and she is soon welcomed into the Batfamily, well not so easily of course.
Bruce, Tim, Jason, Stephanie, and Helena don’t really trust her at first, expecting her to be a mole or something of the sort sent by the League of Shadows. However, Emma, Cassandra and Barbara are the ones to actually warm up and think otherwise. Emma, having been a Shadow herself, sympathized with Zaynah and tried to understand her more and help her open up about her past. Zaynah at first thought it was better if she didn’t join them, seeing as most of the members were unwelcoming, but Damian urged her to, and for some reason it made it easier for her to know that he wants her to be there. With him.
So, she tried to open up for the first time in her life and tell Emma about her past and motivations behind why she joined the League. She also spoke out about what she saw in the Batfamily that she wished she could have had. Ever since, she also became a member of the family and stopped being a Shadow/Assassin, instead becoming a vigilante alongside Damian to protect Gotham which became their new home.
