Sierra Nevada proposes uncrewed, cargo-only variant of Dream Chaser for next round of commercial cargo contracts.
Sierra Nevada Corporation, the Nevada-based corporation that competed for NASA’s Commercial Crew Contracts last year, recently announced their contribution to the second round of ISS Cargo Resupply contracts, known as CRS-2. This second round of contracts extend from 2018-2024. The Dream Chaser Cargo System is an uncrewed version of the vehicle the company has spent the last eight years developing. The crewed Dream Chaser made it into the final round of Commercial Crew transportation Capability, but lost out to Boeing’s CST-100 and SpaceX’s Dragon v.2.
The DCCS, will be the same size as the original Dream Chaser, but will boast an additional service module attached to its aft end. This will host the docking port, solar arrays, and external cargo attachments. The latter is a requirement by NASA for external hardware and other equipment that is needed outside the orbiting complex. However, unlike the original concept, the cargo Dream Chaser will be able to fold its 7-meter wingspan to under 5 meters, allowing the spacecraft to fit on a variety of launch vehicles.
DCCS would be reusable, and is the only concept introduced thus far for the CRS-2 contracts that could return cargo to Earth. Sierra Nevada Space Systems have not yet announced the potential up and downmass capabilities of DCCS.
Upgrades to the crewed Dream Chaser atmospheric test vehicle are already being made by the company, and initial tests are expected to be underway by the end of 2015. In addition to Sierra Nevada, three companies have already confirmed they have submitted proposals to NASA for the CRS-2 contracts, which close March 21. SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell slipped an announcement Tuesday on their bid, but did not offer any further details. Lockheed Martin announced last week its Jupiter/Exoliner spacecraft which changes the current space architecture paradigm. It is also expected that Orbital Sciences will submit a bid, since they won the initial round of commercial cargo contracts in 2008.
