After class, we went to the huerta (garden) and harvested plants so that we could start prepping them for lunch. Each group made something different. Some made the jugo fresco (fresh juice) from piñas (pineapples) while others made the ensalada (salad) and other made the appetizers. We spent our morning in Sarapiqui tasting, feeling, and exploring he various uses of fruits. We had some sweet ones, some sour ones, and some that have medicinal uses. Regardless of the taste or the use, almost everyone tried a little of everything. The group favorite? Carambola Dulce (translation: Sweet Starfruit)!!! Manny did a phenomenal job of explaining each fruit to us as well as helping us to explore new things. City kids meet farm animals (and not-so-secretly fall in love!!!). Kids who wouldn't even go near the dairy cows two days ago courageously stepped up to hold chickens and piglets and pet cows today.
