the last thing he wants to do is alarm his wife, but he knows ines like he knows his own mind and his automatic response to her reaction is to reach out, to entangle his fingers with her own. "nothing's wrong," perse - but he doesn't want her to worry or doubt. not about him, anyway. "it's about...everything. about the world we've been raised in." perhaps there is something wrong, but not between them. never that. "i'm starting to feel weird about certain...things the prophet says. about how we should be, how we should act and speak, about what's right and what's wrong." it is a big confession and it leaves his lips in a rush. a part of him is fearful of the repercussions, of how she might take what he says. he squeezes at her hands, more to comfort himself than anything. "does that make sense?"

"turns out your ex thought i would get a kick out of it." will let out a chuckle at her annoyance and pulled the phone away from her before she managed to grab it. "i mean… you look good in them, don't you think?" he said with a wicked smile as he showed her the photo of her naked again. "i don't know why you're upset, you should be flattered i liked it." he told his step-sister, every since his father had married her mother, he had his eye on her. and when he had stumbled upon the pictures of her naked, it was like hitting the jackpot.

she startles awake when she feels someone sliding into her bed behind her. maxine doesn't need to turn in order to know it's her brother. he's always sneaking into her room and normally she doesn't complain all that much. but she's been in a mood all day because of him, a rare moment where she can't hide the fact that she's annoyed with him specifically. "go away. i'm mad at you still." she says quietly, feeling guilty almost immediately before she remembers how he had completely embarrassed her earlier that day and chased off a seemingly perfectly nice boy that was just trying to get to know her.

"be nice," he says, voice a low murmur as he looks at her, the object of his obsession, the reason he's had to go and make such a mess, "i did all this for you." the knife in his hands still drips red with the blood of his last victim. mattias doesn't even know the man's name, he's just some poor unfortunate soul that chose the wrong night to harass her. well, a dead poor unfortunate soul now. "you should thank me."

harlow checked the kitchen clock. "enough," he said, squinting at the second hand as if it could be bullied into moving slower. "long enough to break a few more rules." no one besides family was supposed to be in the building after hours, and definitely nobody was supposed to be in the kitchen, where the liquor and the good wine were unlocked. if harlow had to guess, they really had fifty minutes if he could keep the pretense going—text his mom about missing inventory on the backup paper towels, pretend there was a sugar syrup 'emergency', so they had plenty of time, but harlow's brain operated in contingencies; no comfort in extra time, only a longer interval to be discovered, to be caught. "wanna start off with a drink? we've got both top shelf brandy and bottom shelf tequila, but the rum is smoother," harlow offered, already reaching for a bottle he kept half-hidden behind stacked bins of pickled lemons.
