Melody!
One Word Drabbles (ACCEPTING)
Silence fills his study as time creeps steadily on, carrying him into another ungodly hour. Robert cannot find sleep this night, just as he couldn’t these last few prior. He’s given up trying as he sits in a chair by the fireplace, a book open over his lap. Tired eyes reread the same sentence over and over again, but each word is forgotten with every pass. A small huff precedes admitted defeat as he shuts it and puts it aside. There’s no point–there isn’t a book in the world that will help him escape from his own, terrible thoughts.
You took a child from her father. You’ve broken an innocent man. You’re destroying lives.
The physicist reaches for a forgotten cup of tea, his nose wrinkling once he tastes how cold it’s become in its neglect. He abandons it again, feeling hopeless and alone in the quiet. Guilt gnaws at him as it has since his visit to DeWitt Investigations. He wonders, vaguely, if it will ever stop. The thought follows him out of his seat and over to a phonograph placed in the corner. Carefully, Robert places the needle down and adjusts the volume as to not disturb his sleeping, guiltless sister. A moment passes before Chopin’s Nocturnes soothe the air around him. The gentle melody escorts Robert to the couch, where he lies on his back with eyes to the ceiling. In minutes, he’s granted the sweet reprieve of sleep with music guiding his dreams. He sees himself at DeWitt’s door, his fist poised to knock as his nerve falters.
Only this time, he’s decent enough to walk away.
