Daredevil: ‘Penny and Dime’ (2.04)
Is Matt a complete hypocrite when he disparages Frank to Karen yet defends Elektra to everyone? Yes, he totally is. However, I don’t think it’s intentional. Matt loves Elektra so much he has trouble understanding his precious little angel is a mass murder machine. But that’s why Elektra needs to share scenes with both Karen and Frank in DD4. Matt can’t dump on Frank for killing with Elektra there, and Elektra would defend Frank right along with Karen.
“Elektra...was with me when the building collapsed. I was...holding onto her when...”
“Look, if you’ve seen the end of The Defenders and you know the events that have led up to the beginning of season 3, Matt is in a horrible place. He got out of the building, Elektra as far as he knows did not...he’s pissed off about the fact that he’s lost the love of his life.” -DD3 showrunner Erik Oleson in an interview with Nerdist on October 30th, 2018.
Thank you very much for reaffirming what we already knew, Erik! Elektra is the love of Matt’s life. They need to reunite in DD4!
There’s so much going on here emotionally as Matt processes what happened, and what really gets to me is how visibly upset he is with tears in his eyes and how he puts his hands up where he was holding onto Elektra as if he can make her appear by demonstrating it.
Matt laughs when he thinks about Elektra in order to break the tension he can’t bear about blaming himself for her death...again.
“You make me feel alive.”
“This is what living feels like.”
