Exercise Smash 1 commenced at dawn on the 4th of April 1944, with B and C Squadrons of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards simulating a [beach landing]... one by one, the Valentine DD tanks rolled forward and disappeared into the troubled sea with the tank squadrons running into difficulty very soon after launching. Waves broke over the canvas screens... water burst through the screens sending six tanks to the seabed... unfortunately not everyone managed to swim free in time, with some men becoming trapped... the ensuring chaos resulted in the loss of six men.
