The warm hearted project The collected knitting work of Loes Veenstra from the Tweede Carnissestraat by Christien Meindertsma stood out because of its bold yet purist character. Meindertsma pays a tribute to dailyness by portraying the knitting work of Loes Veenstra from Rotterdam, a lady that has knit five hundred jumpers since 1955, in a small book. Alongside the book she also organized a parade, proudly exhibiting Loes Veenstra herself and her work, surrounded by a herd of people wearing her jumpers. Like a local hero she was driven through the streets of Rotterdam. The selection committee of the Dutch Design Awards note: this project is a good translation of a special story into a carefully designed book. Moreover, the flash mob puts a smile on your face. Once again, Meindertsma succeeds in presenting a project in a surprising context. The committee greatly appreciates the cooperation within the project and its impact in the neighborhood. Remarkable is that Christien was the winner in the category Best Autonomous Design with a project in which she narrates the life and works of someone else. She positioned herself in a humble place and is author of the context that was created. A similar social spirit is addressed by Moniker, winners in the Best Motion Design category, with their project Do Not Touch, and by Arne Hendriks, winner in the Future Concept category, with his project The Incredible Shrinking Man. You not only have to learn what you can expect, as well as the possible issues that can go wrong, you also want to find out about the surgeon. You want to find out what it is going to cost you, the recoup period, and how much it is going to hurt once you are out of the procedure you are having done. The more you can learn, and the more you know about the procedure, the easier it is going to be for you to decide if you do want to do it, and where you would like to do it. You are going to find that it will help you to choose a top surgeon when you are willing to research and find out who is out there, and you are also going to find the best rates for the work to be done, when you do the research and when you are willing to find out what it is going to cost you in total, for the work that you would like to have done on your nose. With many surgeons, and with so much to learn about the procedure, you have to put the time in to learn and to find out who is out there. When you do this, and when you find out what the best local surgeons can do for you, it is much easier for you to pick the right one, and for you to know what you are going to go through, if you do choose to have the work done on your nose. /////////////////////////////////////////// Alex Fischer (i like this art) Posted: 22 Oct 2013 05:38 PM PDT http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/MD4QinLbZAs/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email Alex Fischer Work from Dry Pixels and Wet Molecules at OBorn Contemporary. "Alex Fischers latest body of work counter-poses the primordial origins of biology against todays dominant technology-based vernacular. In earnest, the artist acknowledges through his practice elements peculiar to the time of his being. Put in alternative terms, Fischer concedes that the acts of being and becoming are wholly different now than at any time in our recent or distant past. Dry Pixels and Wet Molecules poses a valuable and contemporary question using sensory terms-can the digital reconcile with the physical? The works of art comprising this materially varied exhibition reveal themselves as both answers to and instigators of this question. Through digital manipulations, sculpture, and installation, Fischer convinces his audience that technology is not simply an imbricate to the physical and the palpable but rather supersedes both. The multi-modal moment in which art-making has found itself produces what could be called "moist media", a curious but worthwhile corollary to the McLuhans "cold media" of days past. Absorbing this idea, Fischer wedges himself between the dry, cold of the pixel and the wetness of biomolecules. Ultimately suggesting that we are living in a post-digital world, the artist exposes a tactility and precision with his imagery that in effect surpasses the daily surroundings we perceive with our own eyes and bodies." - OBorn Contemporary /////////////////////////////////////////// apple iPad mini with retina display (Designboom) Posted: 22 Oct 2013 04:39 PM PDT http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/VJbgC021GWk/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email the new tablet boasts apple's new A7 chip with 64-bit architecture, providing up to four times faster CPU and up to eight times faster graphics performance than the previous generation. Their "Shank" series, though, places them squarely over both. The pair work as a design team creating items as diverse as art objects and sculptures to bracelets and furniture. For this series the design studio created a set of thirty shanks - hand made weapons fashioned from everyday objects. The items seem authentic, even used, as if picked up off the floor after a prison riot. While the items may carry unsavory violent overtones, they do underscore a strange sort of innovation born out of desperate circumstances. The promising real estate for 3D printing in human anatomy is diverse, and has many open doors for innovations ranging from the incomprehensibly complex, to the remarkably simple. As we all know, sometimes the best innovations are the simple ones-those which seem obvious in retrospect. These are the ideas and inventions which evoke that classic retort within our minds: "Its so logical Im surprised no one has done that already". Well, hindsight makes us all geniuses, and with that, it is worth taking a moment to appreciate the work of Jake Evill, a recent Design graduate from the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, who has brilliantly applied 3D printing technology to the broken-limb industry. Using specialized algorithms and digital processing, Jakes CORTEX cast can be custom-manufactured to suit the specific fracture(s) of each individual patient. By combining various aspects of 3D scanning and X-Ray technology, unique casts can be generated digitally to suit the pressure and placement needs demanded by the exoskeletal brace-a big step forward from the increasingly-archaic modern-standards for fracture alignment. The inspiration for the honeycomb-like structure was derived from the trabeculae, which are the organic beams, struts and rods that comprise the lattice structure geometry in inner-bone tissue. Its somewhat of a coincidentally-convenient aesthetic, in that many of the 3D-printed items on the market today share that characteristic honeycomb mesh appearance-more often than not, to cut-down on the amount of resin used and also to showcase (if not flaunt) the capabilities of 3D printers which can create those desirably-complex shapes that are difficult to injection mold. For the CORTEX structure, however, this geometry makes the most sense. Granted, it also makes it more difficult for your peeps to sign your castbut hey, you wouldnt be having your friends signing your designer shirt, so maybe thats a worthy setback for sporting a hip bone-brace. The original prototype design was printed by Shapeways at their facility in the Netherlands. Future models will be &;3mm thick and will weigh less than five-hundred grams. They will also be fully waterproof and recyclable, and they wont have that oh-so-odiferous rotting fabric stench that often reeks outwardly from the under-layers of plaster and fiberglass casts. As an added bonus, you might even get some one-of-a-kind tanlines to remember your injury by! Jake Evill recently won the New Zealand National James Dyson Award for his design-way to go man! Behind the Green Door is the main exhibition and also the name of the catalog for OAT 2013. It is a slim volume that includes a program for OAT (green pages, as seen below) but also a number of essays, interviews, and projects responding to the theme developed by curators Lionel Devlieger and Maarten Gielen of ROTOR (with Criticat). In their foreword to the book (spread below) and introduction to the main exhibition, the curators ask: "Has the widespread use of the 'green' adjective resulted in an almost complete erosion of the meaning?" It's a good question that responds to the rampant use of the word "sustainability" and the placement of the adjective "sustainable" in front of just about anything. Reading any architect's description of their project these days is believing that every new building is sustainable. But as LEED Platinum buildings are being critically examined as not-so-green, assertions of a building's sustainable principles should really be treated skeptically, arising from the fact the word "sustainability" is used without a shared, professional definition. The curators again ask: "Is it possible to disagree? To be opposed to 'sustainability' while still acknowledging the reality of climate change?" Tapping into the childishness that can arise from using words without really knowing their meaning, the curators pose OAT as a "'time out': A moment to suspend current affairs and practices in order to ponder fundamental, underlying questions." An intriguing proposition comes in the form of Gielen's "Pockets of Sustainability," which asks architects and others to narrow their focus toward determining what is sustainable. An example illustrated in the essay is teak wood, which was specified as reclaimed for the High Line elevated park in New York City. One's first impression may be that using reclaimed teak is good because then the trees needed to supply the same amount would not have to be cut down. But given the desirability of teak for residential decks and other uses, reclaimed teak is often taken from houses in Asia purchased solely for the material. In the process of lining the walls of a bedroom in Bridgehampton, housing and heritage are destroyed halfway around the world. This narrow "pocket" allows people to see just how accurate assertions of sustainability really are. More accurately, it dismantles assertions of sustainability by revealing that nothing is truly sustainable; there is only a gradient of impacts that are both positive and negative. Elsewhere in the catalog is a "Who's Who in Green Building" (not the obvious names, that's for sure); "A Scrapbook of Experimentation," from the 1960s and 70s; an interview with Alfredo Brillembourg (spread below), founder of Urban Think-Tank and a keynote speaker at OAT; and some Nordic/Scandinavian-specific essays and projects (by Snohetta), among other essays. If you're interested in a "time out" be sure to visit OAT's website for information on ordering the catalog. /////////////////////////////////////////// winning solutions produce scrabble typography edition 2 (Designboom) Posted: 22 Oct 2013 12:21 PM PDT http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/i3XpKTTrlmY/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email numerous deluxe components include a built-in lazy susan and non-slip surface on the back of each tile, enabling players to rotate the set on every turn. New brews are taking over menus in bars and specialty shops, and this summer it became legal to home brew in all 50 states. Legalizing home brewing, however, doesn't make the process any simpler. The task is a complicated chemistry where timing is crucial: add hops at 45 minutes instead of 60 minutes and you produce two totally different drinks. Miss the timer for cranking up the heat and you've botched the fermentation process. We use our phones to automate everything from our schedules to our home thermostats, heck--even the number of fresh eggs in our refrigerator. So why not do the same for beer? Meet the Brewbot, a smartphone-powered appliance for making at-home hooch. The device is composed of plastic bins and pipes enclosed by a sleek steel and wood box that while big--it's about the width of two refrigerators--is handsome. It comes equipped with accompanying software that guides users through the process via a smartphone app alerting them to key moments in the brew process. "Things like push notifications help," says Chris McClelland, cofounder of the Irish design company, Cargo, that designed Brewbot. The company had dabbled with making its own in-house brew, but ran into problems developing a consistently delicious beer. That's when, McClelland says, they realized how automated technology could improve the process not just for Cargo, but for every home brewing enthusiast. "We thought the timing was right and we could do something that could help." The Cargo team used Arduino, an open-source electronic prototyping platform, to develop software that automates much of the brewing process. Once in the app, users are connected to a variety of beer recipes provided by the Cargo team. They can also upload their own and save past ones. Once a recipe is selected, "The machine knows how much water, how to heat it, it pulls the sugars, all very accurately depending on the beer," McClelland says. So why bother, why not just buy a six-pack or go to the local bar? "It's important that we didn't automate everything," McClelland says. Brewbot's modular system still asks its human operators to manually add the grains and hops, as well as creativity when it comes to recipes. "We saw that recipes were constantly evolving," McClelland says. "We built that into the app, so people can have face offs or competitions. It's social and beer is about being social." Get a Brewbot through Cargo's Kickstarter campaign, for $2,750. /////////////////////////////////////////// Batman Vs. It started with Warner Bros. telling the crowd that they were going to be in Batman vs. Superman. Yes, a Warner Bros. representative referred to the movie as Batman vs. Superman. Thats still not the official title, but its one that keeps coming up. Warner Bros. also announced that this would be the opening of the movie. Then two scenes were filmed. Both plays were from around Gotham citys 30 yard line. The first play was a tackle for a Metropolis loss. The second was for a touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone for Metropolis. Then the bench cleared for Gotham and they had to break up a fight on the field. Gotham never even went on offense. "Day 1 of filming for 2015s "Batman Vs. Superman". The scene takes place at Gotham City Universitys Stadium facing off against rivals Metropolis University. Everyone in the audience was given various Gotham Football shirts. Some black, some yellow, some T Shirts, some sweatshirts, etc. Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300, Man of Steel) was on set, however the main characters were not there." /////////////////////////////////////////// RS3 Foosball Table by Rafael Rodriguez (Design Milk) Posted: 22 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/LsoTr5zI8uQ/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email After spending years making molds in his familys home workshop, designer Rafael Rodriguez decided to start working on a foosball table. The pensive subjects in Freess's works are rendered with playful textures - sometimes wax-like, sometimes as if spun from delicate thraeds. Powerhouse Precision Laptop (SolidSmack.com) Posted: 22 Oct 2013 11:33 AM PDT http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/uNfQ4IdcwuM/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email Remember when Dell announced the announcement of their latest laptop last July at SIiggraph? Of course you do. The Precision M3800 is the sub-$2k lappy with loads of style that weighs less than a Maltese pup and cooks your cad models like a high-end cooktop. Today, the official release date popped up on the M3800 webpage and press releases were sent near and far, so drop the visual of cute puppies frying apple latkes at the stove and have a look at these specs. Dell Precision M3800 For the mobile workstation connoisseur who desires performance over stretching the seams of their laptop bag, the M3800 gives you a bit more bang for your bag space, loads of power and an incredibly lighter load as you sprint in your flat front khakis through the terminal. From the release: Less than three-quarters of an inch thin (18 mm) and starting at 4.15 pounds (1.88 kgs), dual-cooling to allow maximum performance at all times, and up to 10 hours and six minutes of battery life with NVIDIA Optimus(tm) technology that maximizes battery life for extended productivity, the M3800 enables editing video at a shoot, presenting CAD ideas to customers in style or rendering 3D animation and modeling on the road. Less that three-quarters of an inch thin-ahh, those marketing peeps flipping the thick on us-plus doing all that dirty work on the road. Ill do that on a desktop, my lap, or a log cut down, planed ad sealed to bring out the rich wood grain, thank you very much. The design is quite a departure from the sharp wrist-splitting edges of other precision laptops for which were thankful and you still get all the I/O ports to hook into including four USB ports, a 3-in-1 media card reader, plus a MiniDisplay Port and HDMI to expand your screen real estate across two additional monitors. Money shot #2. The Dell Precision M3800 ultra-thin, ultra-light Workstation. Being such a specialized size offering from Dell, you wont see the configuration options youre use to on other Precision products. The Intel Core i7-4702HQ quad core CPU and NVIDIA Quadro K1100M GPU are standard stuffing, but you do get the choice between the Full HD screen (19201080) or the Quad HD+ screen (32001800) with options on storage of HDD up to 1TB and SDD up to 512GB (with Mini Card storage that bumps that up another 0.5TB). Of course, you also have the option of packing up to 16GB of memory in this skinny laptop. Were a tad picky when it comes to screen screen sizes while out and about, so the one thing we wish this slender beastie had is an option for is a larger screen. However, that makes Dell product development giggle slightly because it completely negates the low-weight/life-changing form factor + performance that makes this new model from Dell so knuckle-slapping attractive. The Precision M3800 shows up on Dell.com and in stores Thursday, November 14th, just in time for the holiday buying frenzy with a starting price of $1,799 USD. You can catch a glimpse of the laptop if youre in Paris today, October 22nd, at the Dell Solutions Tour and after the release at Autodesk University, December 3-5 in Las Vegas. We will see you there. To manage large data files while on the go, the Dell Precision M3800 offers multiple storage configurations including up to two storage devices, with a maximum of 1.5TB of storage (HDD, SSHD, or SSD), up to 35 percent more than HPs 14-inch Z series Utlrabook(tm), one 2.5-inch drive and one solid state Mini-Card storage device (mSATA). "As the traditional workplace continues to evolve, our workstation customers are requiring more portable systems, but cant afford to sacrifice performance for their critical software applications," said Andy Rhodes, executive director of Dell Precision workstations. "With the introduction of the M3800 weve not only delivered on customer requests but set a new standard for mobile workstations with the thinnest form factor, outstanding performance and highest resolution QHD+ display for designing, creating and collaborating with clients while in the office or on the road." Tuned and optimized for the top media & entertainment, engineering and design applications such as Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suite and AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit, Avid Media Composer, Dassault Catia and Solidworks, PTC Creo, Siemens NX and TeamCenter, among others, the M3800 assures mission critical applications will run as designed, and comes with optional Dell ProSupport for premium 24/7 global support from expert technicians. Beautiful Design and Visualization The Dell Precision M3800 features a stylish, industrial-grade design with an aluminum frame, a strong, lightweight carbon fiber chassis, and a Corning Gorilla NBT Glass display with five-finger multi-touch on all systems. Viewing fine detail is easy with the workstations vivid 15.6-inch UltraSharp display available in QHD+ (3200 x 1800), which is higher resolution than the Apple Mac Book Pro Retina, or FHD (1920 x 1080). The M3800 can also be paired with the high-performance 31.5" UltraSharp 32 monitor with exceptional Ultra HD 38402160 resolution, coming later this fall, for a powerful dual-monitor workstation combination. Simplifying the transition from the road to a desk-based workspace, the M3800 offers multiple external monitor support with the optional Dell D3000 USB 3.0 Docking Station. For customers needing access to high-speed Ethernet access, every M3800 is equipped as standard with a USB to RJ-45 dongle. It is also designed with a backlit full-size keyboard, four USB PowerPorts (3 USB 3.0 & 1 USB 2.0), a large gesture-enabled touchpad, HD video webcam and Waves MaxxAudio Pro suite of advanced audio enhancement tools. "We do a lot of on-location video streaming and the M3800 shaves off pounds of weight and bulk that we used to have to carry but we still have the processing power to encode multiple live HD video streams," said Stephen Taylor, IT Manager for Web Services at Appalachian State University. "The absolutely gorgeous QHD+ screen means we are able to monitor 1080p video at full resolution on part of the screen while still monitoring our data feeds on another. When space and weight count, but performance cant be compromised, the M3800 really delivers for us." Availability and Pricing The Dell Precision M3800 will be available worldwide on Nov. 14 with a starting price of $1,799 USD. For additional information visit www.dell.com/speedoflight. His choice of imagery is surreal: a noble 15th century knight melts into a network of dripping stalagmites or a classical marble bust that is overgrown with parasitic sea creatures. The resulting works are a fascinating juxtaposition of material and subject matter that require up to a year of labor to produce. Of the untitled knight piece Herrin says: Untitled (Knight) is the product of the combination of two subjects: 15th century plate armor, and geological cave structure. Studied separately, these two subjects are completely unrelated. The manmade geometric precision of plate armor is formally opposite of the flowing, organic stalactites and stalagmites. Seen together, these two parts present a striking contrast in form and create a theme of time and the effects of nature. The pose of the figure and the general composition are references to the classical sculpture "The Dying Gaul" of ancient Roman antiquity. Rendered entirely in laminated construction-grade 2 by 4s, the material itself irreverently contradicts this classical allusion, and at the same time draws attention to our own cultures reliance on the fast, cheap, and impermanent. Ghanaian artist and craftsman Paa Joe creates elaborate coffins that joyfully pay homage to the lives of their occupants. Paa Joe learned woodworking techniques from his uncle Kane Kwei, the founder of the fantasy coffin art movement. The elaborate coffins he carves - which range in shape, from an oversized Nikon camera to a surreal bird creature - often refer to the interests or vocation of the deceased person. A documentary titled Paa Joe & The Lion about Paa Joe's struggle in the changing coffin industry is currently in production. Take a look at some of the fantasy coffins after the jump.More
