everyday i have SUCH empathy and half light lore to share but it spoils things in my hypothetical wip Swept Up that i want to get to naturally, but also i might never get there?? so sometimes i think i should spoil it anyway hgkjh

mm for now, i think i can say that half light and empathy's relationship pre-Swept Up in my lore timeline is very… stilted. half light doesn't understand empathy at all. empathy understands half light a little too much.

as a note: my Half Light uses she/he, my Empathy uses he/him!!

half light is fire, and empathy is a rain cloud. 34 years ago, the rain could have drowned them all. 34 years ago, the flame refused to die in the only way it knew how.

there is guilt, and there is forgiveness. empathy is holding one end of an olive branch, has been holding that olive branch for as long as he's existed, will continue holding that olive branch with a profound amount of patience.

half light cannot take this olive branch. empathy should not be offering it to her in the first place. empathy is weak and makes the body weak and makes… her weak, yes, but...

there should be no forgiveness here, because there should be no guilt here. half light understands empathy more than he gives himself credit for, because he knows the wrong fucking party is feeling guilt, and empathy has been holding onto the wrong side of the olive branch, and he knows what taking the olive branch would confirm to empathy.

...so it's just avoidance for a long time. half light projects the strongest vibes of "DO NOT FUCKING TALK TO ME" to empathy and empathy listens and doesn't.

it takes a lot for them to confront and address everything, but it's the only way forward for them. i think afterwards, something really beautiful will happen.

fear and understanding. empathy, full of sensitivity and emotion and small, moderate steps, needs half light's counterbalance to finally take action and fight to survive. half light, scared and volatile and waiting for a threat, finally being faced with someone who understands her without her having to say anything about it and will be gentle with her even at her worst... well... she can learn to live with that.

Half light name translations!!

thought it was interesting that there's a mix in here of more literal half-light (dusk, dawn, etc.) and the fight/flight aspect (instinct, suspicion).

I do think his name works best in english. But I like the french version Clair-obscur too. that's the one that translates to chiaroscuro, but clair = clear and obscur = obscure for context... I want to say it's less direct than the others, but I speak french and I don't speak the other languages so if there's any double meanings there I would miss them sadly. localization is so cool...

this is during the tribunal -- my first playthrough my odds of success got worse and worse as I avoided throwing the bomb and half light was absolutely right. (though the second time around I got the difficulty down a bit cause my harry wasn't dumb as bricks and actually had some stuff to stay to improve things)

thank goodness for the calm skills that balance some of these idiots out...

that's all for half light!! my first playthrough had pretty high half light and he was kind of a lot? I actually didn't like him much at first, he was a lot (the first time I played my anxiety disorder was also unmanaged and I wasn't too fond of harry's anxiety embodied lol). but he totally ended up growing on me <3 he's great. I really missed him and his unhinged comments in my low fys second playthrough.
