Finally read the conclave book and I had a litany of thoughts throughout, especially over how fascinating it is that while being the exact same story, the main focus/message of the book is slightly different than the movie. imo the book is more about how no one, no matter how perfect seeming, can be the ideal of the catholic church, we are all fallible, and we will always be fallible to someone. The film is more asking how, in the case of our infallibilty as a human condition, we can define then the ideal pope - and answers with doubt, uncertainty, compassion, and kindness. The book asks, the movie answers. It's a neat little echo, and the movie manages to shift the theme a bit simply by focusing on the echo effect between thomas and vincent more, taking slightly more time and space to bounce that idea between them. One of them always resonates with the other which causes them to act in ways that in turn resonate back. And because the film gives them more time and space to see each other as the next saviour and whatever that means to them, the film version of the relationship between Thomas and Vincent is more satisfying.

However! If we're talking about jacopo's (book!thomas) and aldo's relationship, the book shows it so much better, if not simply because the book gave them more scenes together which really shows how they're *such* good friends. Like, every other scene they're bitching at each other, and then the very next scene together they have their tail between their legs and are apologizing earnestly, reaching out to reassure, a hand on the arm to soothe, a kiss to the cheek to calm. And then hurt each other again right after. But it's always forgiven, no matter how cutting the words that were said, because in the end, there's profound trust and admiration between them, so much so that it makes them choose each other again and again. That relationship is so incredibly human and well worn, compared to film!Thomas and Vincent, which is transformative. Book!jacopo and aldo knows. Thomas and Vincent sees. Book!jacopo and Vincent is also very good (Vincent brings him food and jacopo asks him if he's done the right thing, and they also resonate with each other but the film really hammers it in in the room of tears), but kudos to the film for really bringing that awe thomas feels for Vincent, how he looks at him like he's light shining through a crack in the darkness.

Also, while film conclave to me is a (rom)com, nothing beats the hilarity of the book when jacopo goes on and on about how he's a terrible person a foolish rambling old man and not worthy of anything but he's actually VERY popular and literally everyone loves him and saved him a seat at their table (to which he goes ugh 🙄), and internally is constantly in turmoil and going "i hate the feeling of these sacred garments on my unworthy body i want to tear them off and fling them into the ocean" and then his attendant asks him "how do these clothes feel" and he goes "thank you it feel great :)", and he's also constantly judging the other cardinals and then immediately hating himself for it (with the possible exception of tremblay, whom he's capable of utterly loathing to no detriment to his conscience) (he's hates him so much, guys. Absolutely savage about him. "Look at his stupid head of hair and dumbass athletic body. His bland ass personality combined with narcissistic passionate ambition does not deserve that) but ray cracks one joke about them and he's like hey they are CARDINALS show some respect these are MY MONKEYS this is MY CIRCUS anyway I hate every single one of them, and "not to be self important and i actually hate i have this thought it's so egotistical of me oh my god I hate myself but also God just struck me down for writing my own name didn't he that's what happened right oh my god I'm so narcissistic thinking that but THATS WHAT HAPPENED RIGHT", book jacopo lomeli the anxious bisexual vampire corpse position sleeper that you are the most character to character nothing could ever make me hate you my beloved etc etc
